An important complication of prolonged support of the left ventricle with an assist device when implanted in patients with heart failure is unloading-induced cardiac atrophy. Our recent study suggested that sex-linked differences in the development of atrophy induced by heterotopic heart transplantation (HTX) do exist, however, the role of the environmental conditions dependent on plasma concentrations of sex hormones remains elusive. This study aimed to characterize the mechanical properties of native human ligamentum flavum (LF) and correlate them with histopathological changes. Mechanical property gradients across the cranial, medial, and caudal regions of LF were mapped and compared with histological sections. Low-grade chronic inflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and their complications. In this study, we investigated the effects of salsalate, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, on metabolic disturbances in an animal model of prediabetes-a strain of non-obese hereditary hypertriglyceridemic (HHTg) rats. Gliflozins (sodium-glucose transporter-2 inhibitors) exhibited renoprotective effects not only in diabetic but also in non-diabetic patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Controversial results were reported in experimental non-diabetic models of CKD. Therefore, we examined empagliflozin effects in three CKD models, namely, in fawn-hooded hypertensive (FHH) rats, uninephrectomized salt-loaded (UNX + HS) rats, and in rats with Goldblatt hypertension (two-kidney, one-clip 2K1C) that were either untreated or treated with empagliflozin (10 mg/kg/day) for eight weeks.

Introduction: Previous studies in Ren-2 transgenic hypertensive rats (TGR) after 5/6 renal ablation (5/6 NX) have shown that besides pharmacological blockade of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) also increasing kidney tissue epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EET) levels by blocking soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH), an enzyme responsible for degradation of EETs, and endothelin type A (ETA) receptor blockade retards chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression. This prompted us to evaluate if this progression will be alleviated by the addition of sEH inhibitor and ETA receptor antagonist to the standard complex blockade of RAS (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor plus angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker) in rats with established CKD.

Methods: The treatment regimens were initiated 6 weeks after 5/6 NX in TGR, and the follow-up period was 60 weeks.

We test the competition enhancing effect of selling forward in experimental Cournot duopoly and quadropoly with multiple forward markets. We find that two forward periods yields competitive outcomes and that the results are very close to the predicted theoretical results for quantity setting duopolies and quadropolies. Our experiments lend strong support to the hypothesis that forward markets are competition enhancing.

This study examined the effects of a novel orally active 14,15-epoxyeicosatrienoic acid analog (EET-A) on blood pressure (BP) and myocardial infarct size (IS) in two-kidney, one-clip (2K1C) Goldblatt hypertensive rats during sustained phase of hypertension. Between days 31 and 35 after clip placement the rats were treated with EET-A and BP was monitored by radiotelemetry; sham-operated normotensive rats were used as controls. Tissue concentrations of epoxyeicosatrienoic acids served as a marker of production of epoxygenase metabolites.
