This occurs partly via involuntary mechanisms, including stretch reflexes. Previous single-joint studies demonstrated enhanced reflex sensitivity during interactions with compliant environments, suggesting reflex gain increases to enhance limb stability when that stability is not provided by the environment.

The purpose of this study was to examine how multijoint stretch reflexes are modulated during interactions with stiff and compliant environments. Reflex responses were elicited using a 3D robotic manipulator to perturb arm posture in the three degrees of freedom relevant to functional behaviors. The robot applied controlled displacements and simulated environments with different stiffnesses.

Cats were trained to maintain the head in a forward orientation and then perform a rapid, large-amplitude head turn to left or right in yaw, while standing freely on a force platform. Head turns were biomechanically complex with the primary movement in the yaw plane accompanied by an ipsilateral ear-down roll and nose-down pitch.
