This study uses Raman microscopic spectroscopyto identify any in-depth benefits and drawbacks in diagnosing Staphylococcus epidermidis in human bone grafts.

Deep brain stimulation for opioid use disorder: A systematic review of preclinical and clinical evidence.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a chronic and complex disease characterized by repeated relapses and remissions. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been discussed again and again as a potentially helpful neuromodulatory procedure in this context. In this review, for the first time, we intended to systematically identify the positive and negative effects of DBS in human and animal models of opioid dependence to assess the viability of DBS as a treatment of OUD.

Transorbital embolization of cavernous sinus dural arterio-venous malformations with surgical exposure and catheterization of the superior ophthalmic vein.

Purpose: Cavernous sinus dural arterio-venous malformations (dAVF) represent a pathologic connection between branches of the internal and/or external carotid artery and the cavernous sinus. Standard endovascular approaches for dAVF treatment are transvenous embolization through the inferior petrosal sinus or the facial vein and transarterial embolization. These approaches are not always successful or feasible, and alternative techniques are required.

Microvascular and proteomic signatures overlap in COVID-19 and bacterial sepsis: the MICROCODE study.

Aims: Although coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and bacterial sepsis are distinct conditions, both are known to trigger endothelial dysfunction with corresponding microcirculatory impairment. The purpose of this study was to compare microvascular injury patterns and proteomic signatures in COVID-19 and bacterial sepsis patients.

Methods And Results: This multi-center, observational study included 22 hospitalized adult COVID-19 patients, 43 hospitalized bacterial sepsis patients, and 10 healthy controls from 4 hospitals.

Targeting aberrant replication and DNA repair events for treating breast cancers.

The major limitations of DNA-targeting chemotherapy drugs include life-threatening toxicity, acquired resistance and occurrence of secondary cancers. Here, we report a small molecule, Carbazole Blue (CB), that binds to DNA and inhibits cancer growth and metastasis by targeting DNA-related processes that tumor cells use but not the normal cells. We show that CB inhibits the expression of pro-tumorigenic genes that promote unchecked replication and aberrant DNA repair that cancer cells get addicted to survive.

Techno-economic and sustainability analysis of siloxane removal from landfill gas used for electricity generation.

A technoeconomic analysis (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted on the use of landfill gas (LFG) for electricity generation using an internal combustion engine. This study provides insights that can guide LFG waste to energy (WTE) operators on decisions concerning installation of contaminant removal from LFG for electricity generation. Four scenarios were analyzed; the first (Scenario 1) was a facility with a single siloxane removal unit (SREU) sized for 6 months of continuous use, the second (Scenario 2) was a facility with parallel SREUs sized for one month of use, the third (Scenario 3) was a facility with no SREU, and the fourth was a facility that flared all LFG captured.

Patterns of Intervention Utilization Among School-Aged Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Findings from a Multi-Site Research Consortium.

When designing and interpreting results from clinical trials evaluating treatments for children on the autism spectrum, a complicating factor is that most children receive a range of concurrent treatments. Thus, it is important to better understand the types and hours of interventions that participants typically receive as part of standard of care, as well as to understand the child, family, and geographic factors that are associated with different patterns of service utilization. In this multi-site study, we interviewed 280 caregivers of 6-to-11-year-old school-aged children on the autism spectrum about the types and amounts of interventions their children received in the prior 6 weeks.

Cryptic and abundant marine viruses at the evolutionary origins of Earth's RNA virome.

Whereas DNA viruses are known to be abundant, diverse, and commonly key ecosystem players, RNA viruses are insufficiently studied outside disease settings. In this study, we analyzed ≈28 terabases of Global Ocean RNA sequences to expand Earth's RNA virus catalogs and their taxonomy, investigate their evolutionary origins, and assess their marine biogeography from pole to pole. Using new approaches to optimize discovery and classification, we identified RNA viruses that necessitate substantive revisions of taxonomy (doubling phyla and adding >50% new classes) and evolutionary understanding.

Proteomic Profiling and T Cell Receptor Usage of Abacavir Susceptible Subjects.

Type B adverse drug reactions (ADRs) represent a significant threat as their occurrence arises unpredictable and despite proper application of the drug. The severe immune reaction Abacavir Hypersensitivity Syndrome (AHS) that arises in HIV patients treated with the antiretroviral drug Abacavir (ABC) strongly correlates to the presence of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genotype HLA-B*57:01 and discriminates HLA-B*57:01 HIV patients from ABC treatment. However, not all HLA-B*57:01 HIV patients are affected by AHS, implying the involvement of further patient-specific factors in the development of AHS.

Cytology-based Cancer Surgery of the Head and Neck (CyCaS-HN): a prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial.

Purpose: Liquid-based cytology (LBC) is routinely used in gynecology but is rarely applied in head and neck oncology though many suspicious lesions are easily accessible. While several studies have evaluated the potential use of LBC for early detection and molecular characterization of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs), no study investigated its potential role in surgical management and therapy planning so far.

Methods: Twenty-five patients with cT1-2 squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity and oropharynx were prospectively enrolled in this study and were randomized to two treatment arms: in the control arm, a diagnostic panendoscopy with incisional biopsy was followed by a second operation with transoral tumor resection ± neck dissection and tracheostomy.
