The quality of general obesity management before bariatric surgery (BS) is rarely investigated. Inadequate information regarding undetected and undiagnosed comorbidities (UUCs) in individuals with obesity may influence the penetration, risks, and outcomes of BS. We conducted a cohort study involving a pre-specified medical check-up in a cooperation between a BS department and an outpatient medical centre.

The timely integration of palliative medicine is an important component in the treatment of various advanced diseases. While a German S-3-guideline on palliative medicine exists for patients with incurable cancer, a recommendation for non-oncological patients and especially for palliative patients being treated in the emergency department or intensive care unit is missing to date. Based on the present consensus paper, the palliative care aspects of the respective medical disciplines are addressed.

Palliative care adds significant burdens to healthcare workers. In neuropalliative care (NPC), additional challenges include patient symptom burdens, such as impairments in mobility, cognition, and communication. After one year of operating the first NPC ward in Germany, we assessed burdens, resources, and the number of deaths perceived as stressful.

Mental health conditions are frequent among patients with somatic illnesses, such as cardiac diseases. They often remain undiagnosed and are related to increased utilization of outpatient services, including emergency department care. The objective of this qualitative study was to investigate the significance of the emergency department in the patients' course of treatment and from the physicians' perspective.

Background: Given the scarcity of resources, the increasing use of emergency departments (ED) represents a major challenge for the care of emergency patients. Current health policy interventions focus on restructuring emergency care with the help of patient re-direction into outpatient treatment structures. A precise analysis of ED utilization, taking into account treatment urgency, is essential for demand-oriented adjustments of emergency care structures.

β-wrapins are engineered binding proteins of which different mutants can bind and sequester amyloidogenic proteins amyloid-β (Aβ), islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP), and α-synuclein (α-syn), thereby inhibiting their aggregation into amyloid fibrils. β-wrapin AS10 is capable of binding and sequestering all three amyloidogenic monomers with micro-molar affinity, with its N-terminal domains remaining flexible and non-functional. Here, we computationally investigated the hypothesis that the anti-amyloid properties of AS10 can be amplified by redesigning its currently non-functional N-terminal domain with particular combinations of canonical and non-canonical amino acids (ncAAs) that can mimic the binding and inhibitory anti-amyloid function of curcumin, using a combination of molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations.

Background: This study aimed to (1) examine the proportion of patients presenting to an emergency department (ED) for acute cardiac symptoms with comorbid mental health conditions (MHCs) comprising current depression, generalized anxiety disorder, and panic disorder; (2) compare cardiac patients with and without MHCs regarding sociodemographic, medical, and psychological characteristics; and (3) examine recognition and treatment rates of MHCs.

Methods: Multimorbid patients, aged ≥50 years, presenting to an inner-city ED with acute cardiac symptoms including chest pain, dyspnea, and palpitations, completed validated self-report instruments assessing MHCs and a questionnaire collecting psychosocial and medical information. In addition, routine medical data were extracted from the electronic health record.

Near-infrared wavelength observations are crucial for understanding numerous fields of astrophysics, such as supernova cosmology and positronium annihilation detection. However, current ground-based observations suffer from an enormous background due to OH emission in the upper atmosphere. One promising way to solve this problem is to use ring-resonator filters to suppress OH emission lines.

Sleep-related infant deaths, including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), are the number one cause of death in infants between 28 days and one year of life. Nearly half of families experiencing a sleep-related infant death in Kansas were involved with the Department of Children and Families Child Protective Services (CPS), making CPS staff a priority for safe sleep training. This study assessed the impact of the two-day Kansas Infant Death and SIDS (KIDS) Network Safe Sleep Instructor (SSI) train-the-trainer program on CPS staffs' knowledge of the American Academy of Pediatrics safe sleep recommendations.

Background: Although atrial fibrillation ablation is increasingly used for rhythm control therapy, antiarrhythmic drugs (AADs) are commonly used, either alone or in combination with ablation. The effectiveness of AADs is highly variable. Previous work from our group suggests that alterations in atrial resting membrane potential (RMP) induced by low Pitx2 expression could explain the variable effect of flecainide.

Background: Atrial and ventricular arrhythmias significantly contribute to morbidity and mortality of patients with cardiac disease. Ablation of these arrhythmias has shown to improve clinical outcomes, yet targeted ablation strategies rely on proper mapping capabilities. In the present study, we compare different modes of high-resolution mapping in clinically relevant arrhythmias using HD grid.

Objective: Better understand knowledge, attitudes and practices of pregnant women and mothers of infants around coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Methods: A 58-item electronic survey was distributed to pregnant and postpartum women (infants <12 months) who were >15 years, English-speaking and enrolled in prenatal programs. Data is summarized using central tendency, frequencies and nonparametric statistics.

Objective: Depression and coronary heart disease (CHD) are highly comorbid conditions. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays an important role in cardiovascular processes. Depressed patients typically show decreased BDNF concentrations.

Background: 5-HTTLPR/rs25531 is suspected to be involved in the pathogenesis of both coronary heart disease (CHD) and depression. We aimed to investigate the role of 5-HTTLPR/rs25531 in the development of depressive symptoms among CHD patients in a longitudinal design.

Methods: N = 265 participants with CHD diagnosis were included while hospitalized in a department of cardiology and genotyped for the 5-HTTLPR/rs25531.

Depression and coronary heart disease (CHD) are prevalent and often co-occurring disorders. Both have been associated with a dysregulated stress system. As a central element of the stress system, the FKBP5 gene has been shown to be associated with depression.

We present two prescriptions for broadband ($ {\sim} 77 - 252\;{\rm GHz} $), millimeter-wave antireflection coatings for cryogenic, sintered polycrystalline aluminum oxide optics: one for large-format (700 mm diameter) planar and plano-convex elements, the other for densely packed arrays of quasi-optical elements-in our case, 5 mm diameter half-spheres (called "lenslets"). The coatings comprise three layers of commercially available, polytetrafluoroethylene-based, dielectric sheet material. The lenslet coating is molded to fit the 150 mm diameter arrays directly, while the large-diameter lenses are coated using a tiled approach.

Objective: To analyze the association between heart-focused anxiety, depressive symptoms, health behaviors and healthcare utilization in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD).

Methods: N = 1007 patients with CHD were recruited in hospital and followed for one year in a two-site cohort study. Heart focused anxiety (Cardiac Anxiety Questionnaire [CAQ] with the three subscales fear, attention, and avoidance), depressive symptoms (depression module from the Patient Health Questionnaire [PHQ-9]), health behaviors and healthcare utilization (smoking status, alcohol consumption, physical activity, outpatient physician/psychotherapist visits) were assessed six months after the initial hospitalization.

Introduction: Radiofrequency (RF) ablation is a commonly used tool in the invasive electrophysiology laboratory to treat a variety of rhythm disorders. Reliable creation of transmural ablation lesions is crucial for long-term success. Lesion size index (LSI) is a multiparametric index that incorporates time, power, contact force (CF), and impedance data recorded during RF ablation in a weighted formula and has been shown to predict the extent of myocardial tissue lesions.
