Aims: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a potential complication of foot and ankle surgery. There is a lack of agreement on contributing risk factors and chemical prophylaxis requirements. The primary outcome of this study was to analyze the 90-day incidence of symptomatic VTE and VTE-related mortality in patients undergoing foot and ankle surgery and Achilles tendon (TA) rupture.

Objectives: We present a treatment algorithm comprising 4 Ilizarov methods in managing infected tibial nonunion, using nonunion mobility and segmental defect size to govern treatment choice.

Design: Decision protocol analysis study.

Setting: A university-affiliated teaching hospital.

We describe a new technique of temporary stabilisation of a divergent Lisfranc fracture dislocation of foot with severe crush injury using an Ilizarov frame. A 69-year-old man presented with severe crush injury and complete disruption of the midfoot. Examination revealed full thickness skin necrosis, haemorrhagic blisters and extensive swelling.

Infected nonunion of a long bone continues to present difficulties in management. In addition to treating the infection, it is necessary to establish bony stability, encourage fracture union and reconstruct the soft-tissue envelope. We present a series of 67 infected nonunions of a long bone in 66 patients treated in a multidisciplinary unit.

Background: For hallux valgus correction, distal first metatarsal osteotomy is generally used for minor to moderate deformities, diaphyseal osteotomy for moderate deformities and basal osteotomy or arthrodesis for severe deformities. With the advent of locking plates, there has been renewed interest in opening wedge basal osteotomy.

Objective: We undertook this study in order to understand the power and limitations of this osteotomy.

Achieving arthrodesis of the ankle can be difficult in the presence of infection, deformity, poor soft tissues and bone loss. We present a series of 48 patients with complex ankle pathology, treated with the Ilizarov technique. Infection was present in 30 patients and 30 had significant deformity before surgery.
