Management of blunt pancreatic injury by applying the principles of damage control surgery: experience at a single institution.

Background/aims: This study analyzes the outcomes of treatment for blunt pancreatic injuries by applying the principles of damage control surgery and discusses the management of those injuries.

Methodology: Medical records of the patients who received surgical treatment for blunt pancreatic injury during the last 30 months were investigated retrospectively.

Results: A total of 23 patients were confirmed to have pancreatic injury in laparotomy during the investigation period.

Development and validation of the Excess Mortality Ratio-adjusted Injury Severity Score Using the International Classification of Diseases 10th Edition.

Objectives: This study aimed to develop and validate a new method for measuring injury severity, the excess mortality ratio-adjusted Injury Severity Score (EMR-ISS), using the International Classification of Diseases 10th Edition (ICD-10).

Methods: An injury severity grade similar to the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) was converted from the ICD-10 codes on the basis of quintiles of the EMR for each ICD-10 code. Like the New Injury Severity Score (NISS), the EMR-ISS was calculated from three maximum severity grades using data from the Korean National Injury Database.

A clinical overview of a retrospective study about adult intussusceptions: focusing on discrepancies among previous studies.

This study was to determine clinical entity of adult intussusception, focusing on discrepancies among previous studies and to retrospectively investigate the factors associated with malignancy and survival for 10 years. In our study, 3.7% (N=42) of intussusception were adults.

Clinical significance of bone marrow micrometastasis detected by nested rt-PCR for keratin-19 in breast cancer patients.

Purpose: Breast cancers in the early phase frequently undergo distant metastasis and survival of patients is greatly dependent on distant metastasis. The occurrence of micrometastasis has been suggested to relate with prognostic features of breast cancer, such as lymph node metastasis and the presence of vascular invasion. The aim of this study was to examine the presence of keratin-19 mRNA of epithelial tumors in bone marrow aspirates obtained from breast cancer patients and its possible correlation with tumor staging and disease-free survival.
