Efficient microalgae harvesting and dewatering are critical processes for a range of applications, including the production of raw materials, nutritional supplements, pharmaceuticals, sustainable biofuels, and wastewater treatment. The optimization of these processes poses significant challenges due to the need for high efficiency and sustainability while managing costs and energy consumption. This review comprehensively addresses these challenges by focusing on the development and application of various membrane filtration technologies specifically designed for the effective harvesting and dewatering of algal biomass.

Article Synopsis
  • Pyometra is a serious inflammatory disease affecting older intact female dogs, particularly during the diestrus stage, and can lead to significant health issues.
  • The study examined five types of aquaporins (proteins that help transport water) in uterine tissue and their links to various health markers like blood lipopolysaccharide levels and antioxidant activity in dogs with pyometra.
  • Results showed changes in aquaporin levels between affected dogs and control dogs, including downregulation of AQP1, AQP2, and AQP5, while AQP9 and AQP3 were upregulated, suggesting a complex relationship between these proteins and the disease's progression.

Human urine, a highly saline solution rich in plant-available nutrients, leaves behind significant organic matter after nutrient recovery, necessitating additional treatment for environmental protection. While nutrient recovery from human urine is well-documented in the literature, research on the safe handling of the residual liquid phase is notably lacking. This study investigates nutrient recovery from source-separated human urine using clinoptilolite for the ion exchange/adsorption process and evaluates the safe management of the residual liquid through anaerobic granular sludge and a second-stage of sorption.

Although wastewater with high ammonia concentration is an ideal alternative environment for microalgae cultivation, high ammonia concentrations are toxic to microalgae and inhibit microalgae growth. In this study, the ammonia responses of four widely used microalgae species were investigated. , , and were grown in batch reactors maintained at seven different NHCl concentrations at a constant pH of 8.

Background: Various factors contribute to the development of mortality and morbidity in hip fracture surgeries. This study aims to investigate the effects of modifiable factors such as the type of anesthesia, anesthesia management, surgical method, and timing of surgery on 30-day mortality rates, intensive care unit admissions, and complications.

Methods: A total of 400 patients who underwent hip fracture surgery between January 2021 and December 2023 at a Training and Research Hospital were retrospectively analyzed.

This study aimed to investigate the expression patterns of genes associated with inflammation and oxidative stress in ovarian and uterine tissues of dogs with pyometra, categorized by cervical status (open cervix or closed cervix), which influences disease severity. The control group comprised healthy animals undergoing elective ovariohysterectomy. Tissue inflammatory gene expression and Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were determined while microbial and histopathological examinations were conducted, along with immunohistochemical evaluations.

Pyometra is a life-threatening disease, the severity of which depends on cervical patency status. This study investigated cervical inflammation status as well as the expression patterns and localization of aquaporin (AQP1, AQP2, AQP3, AQP5, and AQP9), and hormone receptors in cervical tissue that influences canine pyometra. Of the 36 animals enrolled in the study, 24 were diagnosed with pyometra and separated into two groups: open cervix pyometra and close cervix pyometra, while 12 healthy animals presented for elective ovariohysterectomies were allocated into the control group.

In recent years especially during COVID-19, the increased usage of antiviral drugs has led to increased interest in monitoring their presence in wastewater worldwide. In this study, it was examined the occurrence, fate and environmental risks of favipiravir which is used for COVID-19 treatment in two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with different treatment processes in Istanbul, Turkey. Favipiravir was measured in WWTPs influent samples, effluent samples and sludge samples with maximum concentrations of 97 μg/L, 64.

Background: Although there have been significant improvements in the treatment of heart failure (HF) in recent decades, its prognosis remains poor. Although there are many biomarkers that can help predict the prognosis of patients with HF, there is a need for simpler, cheaper, and more easily available biomarkers.

Objective: To evaluate the predictive value of pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV) in patients with acute decompensated HF.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares outcomes of tricuspid valve surgery performed on a beating heart versus an arrested heart, analyzing data from 204 patients over five years.
  • Patients were divided into two groups, with 103 undergoing surgery using cross-clamping and 101 using a beating-heart technique, while also receiving other cardiac interventions as needed.
  • Results showed that the beating-heart group had shorter recovery times, lower rates of re-exploration and mortality, and improved echocardiography findings at six months post-surgery, suggesting this method is preferable to avoid clamp-induced ischemia.

Background: Post-ischemia reperfusion can lead to oxidative stress and an increase in oxidative markers. Employing preventive strategies and antioxidant agents may help mitigate ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). The use of a tourniquet in extremity surgery has been associated with IRI.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of two pain management techniques—sacral erector spinae plane block (SESPB) and pudendal nerve block (PNB)—for reducing catheter-related bladder discomfort (CRBD) in patients undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).
  • Conducted from November to December 2023, the study involved 54 patients divided into two groups, finding no significant differences in CRBD incidence, CRBD scores, or patient satisfaction between the two methods, although SESPB had a quicker application time.
  • Both techniques effectively reduced CRBD symptoms in the first 24 hours post-surgery, but SESPB resulted in a significantly

Background: In the current study, it was aimed to evaluate neurotrophic factor levels and their relationship with executive functions in high-risk children and adolescents (high-risk group) whose parents were diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BD) but not affected by any psychiatric disease, and in order to determine possible vulnerability factors related to the disease.

Methods: The study sample consisted of 32 high-risk group and 34 healthy controls. The Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version-Turkish Adaptation (KSADS-PL-T), Stroop Test, Serial Digit Learning Test (SDLT) and Cancellation Test to evaluate executive functions were administered to all participants by the clinician.

Objectives: The Global Aging & Geriatric Experiments in Bipolar Disorder Database (GAGE-BD) project pools archival datasets on older age bipolar disorder (OABD). An initial Wave 1 (W1; n = 1369) analysis found both manic and depressive symptoms reduced among older patients. To replicate this finding, we gathered an independent Wave 2 (W2; n = 1232, mean ± standard deviation age 47.

Background: Cardioplegia solutions are used to protect the myocardium from ischemic injury caused by cardiopulmonary bypass and various types of cardioplegia solutions have been introduced for cardiac surgery. In this study, we aimed to compare the effects of del Nido cardioplegia and microplegia, which were mostly used in our clinic for intraoperative and postoperative processes among patients who underwent elective mitral valve replacement. As a result, the comparison could be performed in a specific patient group without additional valvular or coronary disease, and cardioplegia distribution could be achieved more efficiently.

Anastomotic leaks related to bariatric surgeries are uncommon but are related to increased morbidity and mortality. With the recent advances in intraluminal endoscopic interventions, there are some alternative options to close the leak via over-the-scope-clips/suturing or through-the-scope-clips/suturing or covered stent placement. Herein, we aimed to discuss the efficiency and the role of the through-the-scope suturing technique (X-Tack-160-H, Apollo Endosurgery, Austin, Texas, United States) in two different cases who presented with anastomotic leaks following bariatric surgery.
