Background: We studied the existence of agents in aorta biopsies, such as Chlamydia pneumoniae, cytomegalovirus, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae, that are thought to have a role in atherosclerosis etiopathogenesis role, and their association with peripheral artery disease.

Materials And Methods: We examined aorta wall and internal mammarian artery (IMA) biopsies taken from two different places in 63 patients in whom coronary artery bypass was performed. In these biopsies, we evaluated the deoxyribonuclease (DNA) of these microorganisms using polymerase chain reaction.

The effect of platelet rich plasma on angiogenesis in ischemic flaps in VEGFR2-luc mice.

To improve skin flap healing, one promising strategy in reconstructive surgery might be to optimize platelet rich plasma (PRP) bioactivity and the ischemia-altered expression of genes. We studied both the effect of PRP on ischemic flaps, and whether in vivo bioluminescence imaging (BLI) is a suitable method for the longitudinal monitoring of angiogenesis in surgical wounds. Identification of elements that dictate the specificity of mitochondrial Hsp60 for its co-chaperonin.

Type I chaperonins (cpn60/Hsp60) are essential proteins that mediate the folding of proteins in bacteria, chloroplast and mitochondria. Despite the high sequence homology among chaperonins, the mitochondrial chaperonin system has developed unique properties that distinguish it from the widely-studied bacterial system (GroEL and GroES). The most relevant difference to this study is that mitochondrial chaperonins are able to refold denatured proteins only with the assistance of the mitochondrial co-chaperonin.

Bilateral renal metastasis of an inguinal malignant solitary fibrous tumor, 9 years after primary surgical treatment.

Objective: To report the first case of a bilateral renal solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) as a metastasis of an inguinal malignant SFT.

Indirect, non-competitive amperometric immunoassay for accurate quantification of calpastatin, a meat tenderness marker, in bovine muscle.

A method is described for quantification of the beef tenderness marker, calpastatin, in meat samples by amperometric detection. Using a novel bovine recombinant partial calpastatin protein as standard antigen a low detection limit of 0.2 ng/mL was achieved.

Effect of iloprost on renal function in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting: a clinical study.

Purpose: Renal dysfunction remains a serious complication of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery and is associated with increased mortality and morbidity. To date, a number of different strategies, including new pharmacologic agents, off-pump and cardiopulmonary bypass techniques have been used to avoid it, but none of them proves the excellent result.

Methods: Between April 2009 to September 2011, 185 consecutive patients with multivessel coronary artery disease undergoing elective CABG were included the study.

Intralymphatic delivery of platinum-based chemotherapeutics is possible: an experimental study.

Purpose: Systemic chemotherapy regimens with cisplatinum have been associated with several toxicities. Thus, a loco-regional therapy approach may greatly reduce the toxicity. For this purpose, we designed this experimental study to investigate whether local chemotherapeutic injection is superior to systemic cisplatinum injection for retroperitoneal lymph nodes.

Comparison of the transpalpebral and endoscopic approaches in resection of the corrugator supercilii muscle.

Background: Corrugator resection is an integral part of periorbital rejuvenation and can be accomplished through the open coronal, endoscopic, or transpalpebral technique. While most authors concur about the importance of corrugator resection during brow lift surgery, considerable debate remains regarding the efficacy and technical ease of muscle resection with these approaches.

Postulating manipulation of liposome size and surface properties can provide sub-cellular targeting, we studied: thermodynamics of liposome-macrophage binding; liposome cellular localizations; liposome safety including pro-inflammatory cytokine production. We aimed at extending the body of knowledge on interactions of regular unilamellar (RL-ULV) and multilamellar (RL-MLV) liposomes with macrophages.

The Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor, LY294002 (LY2), has been previously reported to inhibit nuclear factor κB (NFκB) activity, in a PI3K-independent mechanism. The goals of the current research were to determine the specificity of LY2 regarding NFκB subunits, and to identify relevant modulation of cytokine expression in LPS-stimulated macrophages. We found that LY2 specifically diminished the level of p50, but not p65, NFκB in the nucleus of LPS-stimulated mouse RAW264.

Comparison of the effects of pulsatile cardiopulmonary bypass, non-pulsatile cardiopulmonary bypass and off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting on the inflammatory response and S-100beta protein.

Background: We aimed to investigate the effects of off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting, pulsatile cardiopulmonary bypass, and non-pulsatile cardiopulmonary bypass techniques on the inflammatory response and the central nervous system in the current study.

Methods: A total of 32 patients who were scheduled for elective coronary artery bypass graft surgery were included in the study. The patients were allocated into three different groups according to the perfusion techniques used during the cardiopulmonary bypass procedure as follows: off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting group (n=10); pulsatile cardiopulmonary bypass group (n=11); and non-pulsatile cardiopulmonary bypass group (n=11).

Manifestation of incompleteness in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as reduced functionality and extended activity beyond task completion.

Background: This study focused on hypotheses regarding the source of incompleteness in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). For this, we had to document the behavioral manifestation of incompleteness in compulsive rituals, predicting that an exaggerated focus on acts that are appropriate for the task will support the hypothesis on heightened responsibility/perfectionism. In contrast, activity past the expected terminal act for the motor task would support the "stop signal deficiency" hypothesis.

Concomitant face and hand transplantation: perfect solution or perfect storm?

Face and hand composite tissue allotransplantations have evolved into a promising subset of reconstructive transplant surgery due to recent advances in immunotherapy. Concomitant composite tissue allotransplantation, which involves a variable combination of facial (myocutaneous versus osteomyocutaneous) and upper extremity (ie, various levels) composite subtypes, has been performed infrequently at this time. In this review, we will describe many reasons as to why this field remains unexplored.

Minimising added classification error using Walsh coefficients.

Two-class supervised learning in the context of a classifier ensemble may be formulated as learning an incompletely specified Boolean function, and the associated Walsh coefficients can be estimated without the knowledge of the unspecified patterns. Using an extended version of the Tumer-Ghosh model, the relationship between added classification error and second-order Walsh coefficients is established. In this brief, the ensemble is composed of multilayer perceptron base classifiers, with the number of hidden nodes and epochs systematically varied.

Animal behavior as a conceptual framework for the study of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Research on affective disorders may benefit from the methodology of studying animal behavior, in which tools are available for qualitatively and quantitatively measuring and assessing behavior with as much sophistication and attention to detail as in the analysis of the brain. To illustrate this, we first briefly review the characteristics of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and then demonstrate how the quinpirole rat model is used as a conceptual model in studying human OCD patients. Like the rat model, the study of OCD in humans is based on video-telemetry, whereby observable, measurable, and relatively objective characteristics of OCD behavior may be extracted.

Design, development and application of a bioelectrochemical detection system for meat tenderness prediction.

Skin area quantification in preparation for concomitant upper extremity and face transplantation: a cadaver study and literature review.

Background: Numerous experiments in composite tissue allotransplantation (CTA) have identified skin as the most antigenic, with recent experimentation from our laboratory finding a direct correlation between large antigenic skin loads and chimerism. Therefore, in preparation for clinical application of concomitant upper extremity (UExt) and face transplantation, we aimed to identify the exact skin quantities accompanying various upper UExt and concomitant scenarios using a cadaver study.

Methods: Five fresh cadavers were obtained and dissections were performed to simulate five different UExt transplant levels.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients exhibit compulsive acts that share key characteristics that discriminate them from normal behaviors. In OCD, factor analysis of symptomatology has identified separate clusters (contamination/cleaning; harming/checking; symmetry/ordering; hoarding). Here we used video analysis of the motor characteristics of OCD compulsions derived from two separate clusters, checking and cleaning, in order to determine whether behavioral differences exist in the way these two compulsions are performed.

Development of an electrochemical metal-ion biosensor using self-assembled peptide nanofibrils.

This article describes the combination of self-assembled peptide nanofibrils with metal electrodes for the development of an electrochemical metal-ion biosensor. The biological nanofibrils were immobilized on gold electrodes and used as biorecognition elements for the complexation with copper ions. These nanofibrils were obtained under aqueous conditions, at room temperature and outside the clean room.

Thermal burns associated with the misuse of flammable liquids in stoves: a continuing problem.

Coal stoves that are used for heating purposes are more popular in economically developing and undeveloped countries because of their lower operational costs. Unfortunately, they may cause serious burn injuries when flammable liquids are misused to kindle or to accelerate a fire within them. Every year, particularly in the winter, many citizens in Turkey have suffered burn injuries caused by this dangerous practice.
