Background: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) presents significant treatment challenges, particularly in cases unrelated to human papillomavirus (HPV). The chemokine receptor CXCR4, interacting with its ligand CXCL12, plays a crucial role in tumor proliferation, metastasis, and treatment resistance. This study explores the therapeutic potential of engineered monomeric and dimerized CXCL12 variants (CXCL12 and CXCL12, respectively) in HNSCC and evaluates potential additive effects when combined with radiation therapy.

Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) prevalence and severity are associated with increased age, female sex, and apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) genotype. Although estrogen therapy (ET) effectively reduces symptoms of menopause including hot flashes and anxiety, and can reduce dementia risk, it is associated with increased risks of breast and uterine cancer due to estrogen receptor alpha (ERα)-mediated increases in cancer cell proliferation. Because ERβ activation reduces this cell proliferation, selective targeting of ERβ may provide a safer method of improving memory and reducing hot flashes in menopausal women, including those with AD.

To improve outcomes, we developed a novel liposomal targeting system embedded with 2-[1-hexyloxyethyl]-2-devinyl pyropheophorbide-a (HPPH), a chlorin-based photosensitizer. Gestational immune activation disrupts hypothalamic neurocircuits of maternal care behavior.

Immune activation is one of the most common complications during pregnancy, predominantly evoked by viral infections. Nevertheless, how immune activation affects mother-offspring relationships postpartum remains unknown. Here, by using the polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (Poly I:C) model of gestational infection we show that viral-like immune activation at mid-gestation persistently changes hypothalamic neurocircuit parameters in mouse dams and, consequently, is adverse to parenting behavior.

Securing genetic integrity in freshwater pearl mussel propagation and captive breeding.

Securing genetic integrity is of key importance in conservation-oriented captive breeding programs releasing juveniles into the wild. This is particularly true for species such as the endangered freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) for which a number of captive breeding facilities has been established in Europe. The core objective of this study was to compare the genetic constitution of 29 cohorts of captive-bred freshwater pearl mussels from five different breeding facilities in Austria, France, Luxembourg and Germany, with their original 14 source populations from nine major European drainages, based on microsatellite markers.

Mapping multiple endocrine disrupting activities in Virginia rivers using effect-based assays.

Water sources are frequently contaminated with natural and anthropogenic substances having known or suspected endocrine disrupting activities; however, these activities are not routinely measured and monitored. Phenotypic bioassays are a promising new approach for detection and quantitation of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). We developed cell lines expressing fluorescent chimeric constructs capable of detecting environmental contaminants which interact with multiple nuclear receptors.

Breast-Specific Sensuality and Appearance Satisfaction: Comparison of Breast-Conserving Surgery and Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy.

Background: We demonstrated previously that lumpectomy (L) patients reported higher appearance satisfaction, appreciation of a pleasurable breast caress, and persistence of the breast during intimacy than mastectomy with reconstruction, which we used to describe breast-specific sensuality. Our current objective was to compare breast-specific sensuality between L and nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM).

Design: An anonymous, cross-sectional survey was distributed to breast cancer survivors between 2014 and 2016.

Methods: All applicants for the 2011-2012 Army FYGME positions in general surgery were included. Applications were used to obtain demographics and peer-reviewed publications.
