Glucocorticoids are potent anti-inflammatory drugs, although their use is associated with severe side effects. Loading glucocorticoids into suitable nanocarriers can significantly reduce these undesirable effects. Macrophages play a crucial role in inflammation, making them strategic targets for glucocorticoid-loaded nanocarriers.

Various strategies have been employed to improve the reliability of 2D, 3D, and co-culture in vitro models of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, including using extracellular matrix proteins such as collagen I to promote cell adhesion. While studies have demonstrated the significant benefits of culturing cells on collagen I, its effects on the HepG2 cell line after exposure to palmitate (PA) have not been investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effects of PA-induced lipotoxicity in HepG2 cultured in the absence or presence of collagen I.

Although some clinical studies have reported increased mitochondrial respiration in patients with fatty liver and early non‑alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), there is a lack of models of non‑alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with similar findings. Despite being the most commonly used immortalized cell line for models of NAFLD, HepG2 cells exposed to free fatty acids (FFAs) exhibit a decreased mitochondrial respiration. On the other hand, the use of HepaRG cells to study mitochondrial respiratory changes following exposure to FFAs has not yet been fully explored.

Aging is a process of gradual decline in the functional capacity of the human body that leads to a significant increase in the risk of death over time. Although it is a process universal to all animals, its rate is not the same. Biomarkers of aging aim to better describe the aging process at the level of the individual, organ, tissue, or single cell.

Carvedilol is a widely used beta-adrenoreceptor antagonist for multiple cardiovascular indications; however, it may induce cholestasis in patients, but the mechanism for this effect is unclear. Carvedilol also prevents the development of various forms of experimental liver injury, but its effect on nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is largely unknown. In this study, we determined the effect of carvedilol (10 mg/kg/day p.

Microtubules are cytoskeleton components with unique mechanical and dynamic properties. They are rigid polymers that alternate phases of growth and shrinkage. Nonetheless, the cells can display a subset of stable microtubules, but it is unclear whether microtubule dynamics and mechanical properties are related.

Carbon fibres used as a honeycomb core material (subject to a proper in-depth analysis of their reinforcement patterns) allows solving the thermo-dimensional stability problem of the units for space systems. Based on the results of numerical simulations with the support of finite element analysis, the paper provides an evaluation of the accuracy of analytical dependencies for the determination of the moduli of elasticity of a carbon fibre honeycomb core in tension/compression and shear. It is shown that a carbon fibre honeycomb reinforcement pattern has a significant impact on the mechanical performance of the carbon fibre honeycomb core.

The mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP) is a calcium-dependent, ion non-selective membrane pore with a wide range of functions. Although the MPTP has been studied for more than 50 years, its molecular structure remains unclear. Short-term (reversible) opening of the MPTP protects cells from oxidative damage and enables the efflux of Ca ions from the mitochondrial matrix and cell signaling.

Motility assays use surface-immobilized molecular motors to propel cytoskeletal filaments. They have been widely used to characterize motor properties and their impact on cytoskeletal self-organization. Moreover, the motility assays are a promising class of bioinspired active tools for nanotechnological applications.

Active cytoskeletal materials in vitro demonstrate self-organizing properties similar to those observed in their counterparts in cells. However, the search to emulate phenomena observed in living matter has fallen short of producing a cytoskeletal network that would be structurally stable yet possess adaptive plasticity. Here, we address this challenge by combining cytoskeletal polymers in a composite where self-assembling microtubules and actin filaments collectively self-organize due to the activity of microtubule-percolating molecular motors.

Currently, prefabricated panel structures are typical products made of polymeric composite materials. The integrity of the composite panels, their structure and accuracy of making a contour are largely associated with the manifestation of residual technological stresses. The above phenomena and associated stress-strain behaviour inevitably occur in the process of moulding of the composite products.

Aging is a process of gradually reducing abilities and functional capacities of the organism. It is a universal process with a considerable degree of variability that is characteristic of all higher animals. Among the theories of ageing, the theory of damage accumulation, which integrates the mechanisms of ageing known to date, is currently widely accepted.

Mitochondria play an important role in the cell aging process. Changes in calcium homeostasis and/or increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production lead to the opening of mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP), depolarization of the inner mitochondrial membrane, and decrease of ATP production. Our work aimed to monitor age-related changes in the Ca2+ ion effect on MPTP and the ability of isolated rat liver mitochondria to accumulate calcium.

Mitochondrial substrate flux is a distinguishing characteristic of each cell type, and changes in its components such as transporters, channels, or enzymes are involved in the pathogenesis of several diseases. Mitochondrial substrate flux can be studied using intact cells, permeabilized cells, or isolated mitochondria. Investigating intact cells encounters several problems due to simultaneous oxidation of different substrates.

Constriction of the cytokinetic ring, a circular structure of actin filaments, is an essential step during cell division. Mechanical forces driving the constriction are attributed to myosin motor proteins, which slide actin filaments along each other. However, in multiple organisms, ring constriction has been reported to be myosin independent.

Mitochondria play an essential role in the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Previously, we found that succinate-activated respiration was the most affected mitochondrial parameter in mice with mild NAFLD. In this study, we focused on the role of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) in NAFLD pathogenesis.

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is one of the most important causes of liver disease worldwide leading the foreground cause of liver transplantation. Recently miRNAs, small non-coding molecules were identified as an important player in the negative translational regulation of many protein-coding genes involved in hepatic metabolism. Visceral adipose tissue was found to take part in lipid and glucose metabolism and to release many inflammatory mediators that may contribute to progression of NAFLD from simple steatosis to Non-Alcoholic SteatoHepatitis.
