Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is the primary method to investigate macro- and microstructure of neural white matter . DWI can be used to identify and characterize individual-specific white matter bundles, enabling precise analyses on hypothesis-driven connections in the brain and bridging the relationships between brain structure, function, and behavior. However, cortical endpoints of bundles may span larger areas than what a researcher is interested in, challenging presumptions that bundles are specifically tied to certain brain functions.

Category-selective regions in ventral temporal cortex (VTC) have a consistent anatomical organization, which is hypothesized to be scaffolded by white matter connections. However, it is unknown how white matter connections are organized from birth. Here, we scanned newborn to 6-month-old infants and adults and used a data-driven approach to determine the organization of the white matter connections of VTC.

Background: BRAF mutation has been recognized as a negative prognostic marker for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), but these data are from common BRAF V600E-mutated mCRC. Combination therapy of BRAF inhibitor and anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) antibody has been approved for BRAF V600E-mutated mCRC. However, BRAF non-V600 mutations are rare mutations, and their clinical behavior is not understood.

Education sculpts specialized neural circuits for skills like reading that are critical to success in modern society but were not anticipated by the selective pressures of evolution. Does the emergence of brain regions that selectively process novel visual stimuli like words occur at the expense of cortical representations of other stimuli like faces and objects? "Neuronal Recycling" predicts that learning to read should enhance the response to words in ventral occipitotemporal cortex (VOTC) and decrease the response to other visual categories such as faces and objects. To test this hypothesis, and more broadly to understand the changes that are induced by the early stages of literacy instruction, we conducted a randomized controlled trial with pre-school children (five years of age).

Reading entails transforming visual symbols to sound and meaning. This process depends on specialized circuitry in the visual cortex, the visual word form area (VWFA). Recent findings suggest that this text-selective cortex comprises at least two distinct subregions: the more posterior VWFA-1 is sensitive to visual features, while the more anterior VWFA-2 processes higher level language information.

Background/aim: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a relatively non-invasive anti-cancer therapy that employs a photosensitizer with a specific wavelength of light, causing a photochemical reaction that releases free radicals, thereby inducing tumor cell necrosis via oxidative stress. The oxygen molecule reaches the singlet excited state through efficient energy transfer from an excited triplet state of the photosensitizer. Heavy atoms are frequently introduced in photosensitizers for efficiently generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) in PDT, known as the heavy atom effect.

Introduction: Endoscopic diagnosis is essential for predicting the curability of early gastric cancer (EGC; R0 resection) before treatment, but the relationship between ulcerative lesions and clinical outcomes remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the effect of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) or potassium-competitive acid blocker (P-CAB) on the morphological changes of ulcerative EGCs and its relevance to the clinical outcomes.

Methods: Altogether, 143 patients with differentiated ulcerative EGC that were resected by endoscopic submucosal dissection were retrospectively identified and divided into the following two cohorts depending on their PPI/P-CAB administration status: PPI/P-CAB (n = 76) and non-PPI/P-CAB (n = 67) cohorts.

Background/aim: Among the four genomic subtypes of endometrial cancer, distinguishing between the DNA polymerase epsilon mutation (POLEmut) and no specific molecular profile (NSMP) subtypes requires genomic profiling owing to the lack of surrogate immunohistochemical markers. We have previously found that, histologically, the POLEmut-subtype exhibits surface epithelial slackening (SES). Therefore, to improve subtype identification, we aimed to extract cytological features corresponding to SES in POLEmut-subtype cervical cytology specimens.

Background: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an effective tumor treatment that involves the administration of a photosensitizer to generate cytotoxic O [reactive oxygen species (ROS)] from molecular oxygen that is produced from energy absorption following tumor irradiation at specific wavelengths. Ferroptosis is induced by the disruption of the glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) antioxidant system, leading to lipid peroxidation. We hypothesized that talaporfin sodium-photodynamic therapy (TS-PDT)-generated ROS would lead to ferroptosis via accumulation of lipid peroxidation.

High-level visual areas in ventral temporal cortex (VTC) support recognition of important categories, such as faces and words. Word-selective regions are left lateralized and emerge at the onset of reading instruction. Face-selective regions are right lateralized and have been documented in infancy.

Plexiform fibromyxoma is a rare mesenchymal tumor identified in recent years and presents as a gastrointestinal submucosal tumor that is typically located in the gastric antrum. We report a case of gastric plexiform fibromyxoma in which the diagnosis was difficult despite repeated tissue sampling. Before visiting our hospital, the patient had been followed up for 3 years without a definitive diagnosis despite serial examinations, including computed tomography, endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, and endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration.

Reovirus, a naturally occurring oncolytic virus, initiates the lysis of tumor cells while simultaneously releasing tumor antigens or proapoptotic cytokines in the tumor microenvironment to augment anticancer immunity. However, reovirus has developed a strategy to evade antiviral immunity via its inhibitory effect on interferon production, which negatively affects the induction of antitumor immune responses. The mammalian adaptor protein Stimulator of Interferon Genes (STING) was identified as a key regulator that orchestrates immune responses by sensing cytosolic DNA derived from pathogens or tumors, resulting in the production of type I interferon.

Although anti-tumor necrosis factor-α monoclonal antibody biological preparations (BP) agents are widely used as an established treatment tool for refractory ulcerative colitis (UC), whether leukocytapheresis/granulocytapheresis (L/G-CAP) has similar beneficial impact on the disease activity remains undetermined. Furthermore, the costs defrayed for the treatment with these 2 modalities have not been compared. We retrospectively evaluated whether L/G-CAP offered sustained beneficial effects over 2-year period.

Objective: Cochlear implantation (CI) for the treatment of single-sided deafness (SSD) is a relatively new treatment modality. Although comparing the effectiveness of CI and contralateral routing of signal (CROS) hearing aids (HAs) is important, very few reports on this topic exist. In this study, objective assessments and subjective assessments were conducted to determine which SSD individuals would prefer CI or CROS HAs.

Genetic abnormalities induce the DNA damage response (DDR), which enables DNA repair at cell cycle checkpoints. Although the DDR is thought to function in preventing the onset and progression of cancer, DDR-related proteins are also thought to contribute to tumorigenesis, tumor progression, and drug resistance by preventing irreparable genomic abnormalities from inducing cell death. In the present study, the combination of ataxia telangiectasia-mutated serine/threonine kinase (ATM) and checkpoint kinase 1 (Chk1) inhibition exhibited synergistic antitumor effects and induced synergistic lethality in colorectal cancer cells at a low dose.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a relatively non-invasive anti-cancer therapy that employs a photosensitizer with a specific wavelength of light irradiation. PDT induces direct cell killing and enhancement effects on tumor immunity, but its underlying mechanism remains unknown. Here, we perform a basic analysis of the anti-tumor effect of talaporfin sodium (TS)-PDT as well as its synergism with the immune checkpoint inhibitor anti-programmed death 1 (anti-PD-1) antibody.
