Urachal cancer (UrC) is a rare disease which is mostly diagnosed late due to symptoms caused by its local invasion to the urinary bladder. Given the lack of clinical trials and guideline recommendations for systemic treatment, a molecularly informed precision oncology approach is a viable option for UrC already in the early lines of systemic treatment. While single case experiences may provide valuable reference for later decision-making, well-documented clinical experience with off-label targeted treatments is limited to a few patients.

Background: Actual expansion of a transcatheter heart valve (THV) might differ from nominal, particularly during nonaortic valve-in-valve for a degenerated bioprosthetic surgical heart valve (SHV). This pilot study compared THV expansion measured using large-field-of-view intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) vs. multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) and assessed the correlation between THV dimensions and transvalvular gradients.

Article Synopsis
  • Missions into Deep Space this decade are concerning due to potential health risks from microgravity and galactic cosmic radiation, especially for kidneys.
  • Researchers used various biological and clinical analyses on samples from spaceflight-exposed mice, humans, and simulated environments.
  • Key findings reveal that spaceflight causes kidney-related issues like increased risk of kidney stones, changes in nephron structure, and damage from radiation exposure.

  • Urachal cancer (UrC) is a rare bladder tumor, comprising less than 1% of all cases, with a poor 5-year survival rate of about 50% for resectable tumors and even lower for metastatic cases.
  • A systematic review of registry-based studies identified 6 key publications, with overall incidence rates of UrC calculated at 0.04 per 100,000 person-years and highlighting geographic variations, notably higher in Japan.
  • The study found that the median age at diagnosis is 60 years, with a female to male ratio of 2:3, and adenocarcinoma being the most common tumor type, making it vital to improve understanding and awareness of this rare cancer.

Purpose: Prior to 90Y radioembolization procedure, a pretherapy simulation using 99mTc-MAA is performed. Alternatively, a small dosage of 90Y microspheres could be used. We aimed to assess the accuracy of lung shunt fraction (LSF) estimation in both high activity 90Y posttreatment and pretreatment scans with isotope activity of ~100 MBq, using different imaging techniques.

We measured the nuclear-recoil ionization yield in silicon with a cryogenic phonon-sensitive gram-scale detector. Neutrons from a monoenergetic beam scatter off of the silicon nuclei at angles corresponding to energy depositions from 4 keV down to 100 eV, the lowest energy probed so far. The results show no sign of an ionization production threshold above 100 eV.

Silk fibroin is a naturally derived polymer with great potential for biomedical use due to its strength, lack of immune response, and ability to biodegrade. The relatively hydrophobic nature of silk, however, can cause challenges with cell adhesion . Therefore, modification must be performed to improve the surface hydrophilicity, enhancing silk utility in the biomedical space.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers evaluated circulating matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7) levels as a potential prognostic factor by analyzing serum samples from UBC patients and controls, finding higher MMP-7 in patients and particularly in those with positive lymph nodes.
  • Despite some LN-positive patients having low MMP-7 levels, high MMP-7 was linked to poorer survival, indicating it can help identify LN-negative patients at high risk for undetected metastases, though it won't guide decisions on the extent of dissection needed.

: Left ventricular non-compaction (LVNC) is a rare cardiomyopathy typically involving the left ventricle (LV); however, the right ventricle (RV) can also be affected. This case-control study aimed to assess the morphology and function of LV and RV in children with LVNC. : Sixteen children (13 ± 3 years, six girls) with LVNC were compared with 16 sex- and age-matched controls.

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search low ionization threshold experiment (CDMSlite) achieved efficient detection of very small recoil energies in its germanium target, resulting in sensitivity to lightly ionizing particles (LIPs) in a previously unexplored region of charge, mass, and velocity parameter space. We report first direct-detection limits calculated using the optimum interval method on the vertical intensity of cosmogenically produced LIPs with an electric charge smaller than e/(3×10^{5}), as well as the strongest limits for charge ≤e/160, with a minimum vertical intensity of 1.36×10^{-7}  cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} at charge e/160.

This paper presents the characteristics of a modernized rotary hammer equipped with a new measuring system based on strain gauges for recording short-term signals. The stand makes it possible to carry out dynamic tensile and bending tests in the range of linear speed of the exciting element from 5 to 40 m/s. Initial tests of dynamic deformation and structural studies in the form of fractures carried out on a representative group of metallic materials allowed determining the correlation "strain rate-strain structure".

The continuous mutation of SARS-CoV-2 opens the possibility of the appearance of new variants of the virus with important differences in its spreading characteristics, mortality rates, etc. On 14 December 2020, the United Kingdom reported a potentially more contagious coronavirus variant, present in that country, which is referred to as VOC 202012/01. On 18 December 2020, the South African government also announced the emergence of a new variant in a scenario similar to that of the UK, which is referred to as variant 501.

Both microgravity and radiation exposure in the spaceflight environment have been identified as hazards to astronaut health and performance. Substantial study has been focused on understanding the biology and risks associated with prolonged exposure to microgravity, and the hazards presented by radiation from galactic cosmic rays (GCR) and solar particle events (SPEs) outside of low earth orbit (LEO). To date, the majority of the ground-based analogues (e.

In hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) patients, left ventricular (LV) maximal wall thickness (MWT) is one of the most important factors determining sudden cardiac death (SCD) risk. In a large unselected sample of HCM patients, we aimed to simulate what changes would occur in the calculated SCD risk according to the European HCM Risk-SCD calculator when MWT measured using echocardiography was changed to MWT measured using MRI. All consecutive patients with HCM who underwent cardiac MRI were included.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in China many models have appeared in the literature, trying to simulate its dynamics. Focusing on modeling the biological and sociological mechanisms which influence the disease spread, the basic reference example is the SIR model. However, it is too simple to be able to model those mechanisms (including the three main types of control measures: social distancing, contact tracing and health system measures) to fit real data and to simulate possible future scenarios.

The combination of the high intensity proton beam facilities and massive detectors for precision measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters including the charge-parity violating (CPV) phase will open the door to help make beyond the standard model (BSM) physics reachable even in low energy regimes in the accelerator-based experiments. Large-mass detectors with highly precise tracking and energy measurements, excellent timing resolution, and low energy thresholds will enable the searches for BSM phenomena from cosmogenic origin, as well. Therefore, it is also conceivable that BSM topics in the next-generation neutrino experiments could be the dominant physics topics in the foreseeable future, as the precision of the neutrino oscillation parameter and CPV measurements continue to improve.
