Background: The aim of our study was to describe 50 cases of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and HIV co-existence that are under medical supervision in Warsaw.

Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive study. Fifty HIV-infected patients, diagnosed with IBD during the years 2001-2019, were identified.

Background: Syphilis is an infection frequently seen with HIV, and European guidelines on the management of syphilis suggest that HIV-infected patients may have an increased risk of early neurological involvement, sometimes asymptomatic. Recent study shows a relationship between neurosyphilis and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) HIV viral load (VL), which in turn may be associated with subsequent neurocognitive decline.

Objectives And Methods: The aim of the study was estimation of the frequency of neurosyphilis among HIV-positive patients with early syphilis.

Background: Rates of first antiretroviral therapy (cART) modifications are high in most observational studies. The age-related differences in treatment duration and characteristics of first cART modifications remain underinvestigated. With increasing proportion of older patients in HIV population it is important to better understand age-related treatment effects.

The progressive degradation of aquatic ecosystems and ecohydrological role of rivers is one of the most important global environmental issues. The loss of the ability of rivers to self-purify waters due to the disturbances of river continuity cause a lack of biological life in parts of rivers or even in an entire river. The appearance of alien species in degraded aquatic environments is an increasingly common phenomenon and constitutes one of the threats to biodiversity.

Nasal mucosa cytology is an additional examination useful to differentiate chronic rhinitis in allergological and laryngological diagnostics, including chronic sinusitis. The aim of the study was to estimate the cytological picture in a group of patients with the highest percentage of squamous epithelia, suggesting the atrophic rhinitis. The analysis was carried out on the basis of cytological results performed in 3055 patients diagnosed because of chronic rhinitis.

Objectives: Linkage to care after HIV diagnosis remains underinvestigated in Europe, yet delays in linkage to care are an important obstacle to controlling the HIV epidemic. The Test and Keep in Care (TAK) project aims to determine the prevalence of HIV-positive persons who are lost or late to care and factors associated with this.

Methods: Data from community-based voluntary counselling and testing that occurred in 2010-2011 were linked with data from HIV clinics using unique test numbers.

Poly-ADP-ribose polymerases (PARP) are involved in a number of processes that are vital for every living cell. Once activated by the presence of DNA damage they trigger poly-ADP-ribosylation of various proteins which are crucial for DNA repair, preserving of genom integrity, regulation of transcription, proliferation and apoptosis. PARP1, which is the best known enzyme of PARP protein family, plays a role in single-strand breaks (SSB) repair.

It is unclear whether the current antiviral treatment for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection results in complete elimination of the virus, or whether small quantities of virus persist. Our study group comprised 17 patients with chronic HCV who had sustained virological response (SVR) after interferon/ribavirin treatment. Serum and peripheral blood mononudear cells were collected 2 to 3 times at 3- to 6-month intervals starting 40 to 109 months (mean, 64.

Background: Spontaneous clearance of hepatitis C virus (HCV) after acute hepatitis C, and the course of chronic HCV infection in patients who did not clear the virus, were studied.

Patients And Methods: Patients with acute C or non-A, non-B hepatitis who were hospitalized between 1988 and 1998 were called for evaluation in 2001. They were tested for anti-HCV, serum HCV-RNA, HCV-RNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and liver enzymes.

We have analyzed the presence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis G virus (HGV) sequences in bone marrow and serum samples from 48 patients of a hematologic outpatient clinic. HCV RNA was detected in 18 (38%) and 15 (31%) and HGV RNA was detected in 6 (13%) and 9 (19%) of serum and bone marrow samples, respectively. In 3 patients, HGV RNA was detectable in bone marrow but not in the serum; 2 of these patients were negative for the presence of specific antibodies.

The incidence and clinical significance of hepatitis G virus (HGV) is still not fully known. The aim of our study was to assess the frequency of HGV RNA and antibody to HGV E2 protein (anti-E2) in Polish blood donors and patients with hepatitis, and to compare the sequence of HGV clones with those reported by others. Two-hundred and nineteen blood donors and 83 patients with hepatitis were studied.

Individuals infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) usually produce anti-HCV antibodies detectable by enzyme immunoassay (EIA); however, in certain viremic cases this antibody does not appear. To investigate whether anti-HCV in these cases is detectable by Western blot (WB), 38 HCV RNA positive/anti-HCV EIA-negative sera were tested by RIBA 3.0 or LiaTek III.

Histopathological and ultrastructural findings in the liver of a female patient who suffered from Wilson's disease (WD) and viral hepatitis type C (HCV) are reported. Light and electron microscopy examinations demonstrated a variety of morphological alterations--many of them frequently seen in livers of patients with WD and others that can be found in cases presenting HCV infection. The influence of coexistence of these two diseases on morphological changes is discussed.
