Considering the ageing population in economically advanced regions across the world, measures are necessary to enhance the health of the older population as well as contain public healthcare spending. Hong Kong implements the Elderly Health Care Voucher Scheme (EHCVS), providing older people aged 65 or above an annual subsidy of visiting private healthcare service providers for chronic disease prevention and management. The services also aim at reallocating demand from the public to private sector as well as improve quality of services.

Purpose: The performance of current small animal PET scanners is mainly limited by the detector performance and depth encoding detectors are required to develop PET scanner to simultaneously achieve high spatial resolution and high sensitivity. Among all depth encoding PET detector approaches, dual-ended readout detector has the advantage to achieve the highest depth of interaction (DOI) resolution and spatial resolution. Silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) is believed to be the photodetector of the future for PET detector due to its excellent properties as compared to the traditional photodetectors such as photomultiplier tube (PMT) and avalanche photodiode (APD).

We experimentally investigate the second-harmonic generation of a high-order Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) mode under the quasi-phase-matching (QPM) configuration. First, we introduce a simple method to observe the azimuthal (l) and radial (p) indices of the high-order LG modes. Based on the astigmatic transformation technique, l and p are revealed in the number of dark stripes of the converted pattern in the focal plane.

Intense thunderstorms produce rapid cloud updrafts and may be associated with a range of destructive weather events. An important ingredient in measures of the potential for intense thunderstorms is the convective available potential energy (CAPE). Climate models project increases in summertime mean CAPE in the tropics and subtropics in response to global warming, but the physical mechanisms responsible for such increases and the implications for future thunderstorm activity remain uncertain.

Rice straw pretreatment mediated by choline chloride (ChCl) or lactic acid (Lac) sequences deep eutectic solvents (DESs) was investigated in this work. Hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) and hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) proved to be both important for DESs pretreatment efficiency. DESs containing lots of hydroxyl or amino groups with a high intermolecular hydrogen-bond (H-bond) strength exhibited weak biomass deconstruction abilities.

With experimental results, we demonstrate the generation of high-order Laguerre-Gaussian modes with non-zero radial indices using a metal meta-surface, which is composed of a series of rectangle nanoholes with different orientation angles. The phase shift after transmission through the metasurface is determined by the orientation angle of the nanohole. This device works over a broad wavelength band ranging from 700 to 1000 nm.

Nutrient availability and stresses impact a cell's decision to enter a growth state or a quiescent state. Acetyl-CoA stimulates cell growth under nutrient-limiting conditions, but how cells generate acetyl-CoA under starvation stress is less understood. Here, we show that general stress response factors, Msn2 and Msn4, function as master transcriptional regulators of yeast glycolysis via directly binding and activating genes encoding glycolytic enzymes.

Grb2-associated binder 1 (Gab1) is often aberrant in cancerous cells and tissues, whose alteration is responsible for aggressive phenotypes. In this study, we examined the Gab1 expression in human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) tissues and investigated the cellular and molecular effect of Gab1 on migration, invasion, and cell growth of the OSCC cell lines SCC15 and SCC25. We found that Gab1 was overexpressed in OSCC tissues and cells, which is related to the protein levels of various molecules associated with cellular proliferation, migration, and invasion.

The intestinal microbiota has been identified as an environmental factor that markedly affects energy storage and body-fat accumulation in mammals, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here we show that the microbiota regulates body composition through the circadian transcription factor NFIL3. transcription oscillates diurnally in intestinal epithelial cells, and the amplitude of the circadian oscillation is controlled by the microbiota through group 3 innate lymphoid cells, STAT3 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 3), and the epithelial cell circadian clock.

Modulating the heterogeneous microenvironment in room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) by external stimuli is an important approach for understanding and designing external field-induced chemical reactions in natural and applied systems. Here, we report for the first time the redistribution of oxygen molecules related to microstructure changes in RTILs induced by an external laser field, which is probed simultaneously by the triplet-state dynamics of porphyrin. A remarkably long-lived triplet state of porphyrin is observed with changes of microstructures after irradiation, suggesting that charge-shifted O molecules are induced by the external field and/or rearranged intrinsic ions move from nonpolar domains into the polar domains of RTILs through electrostatic interactions.

Background: The Orf virus (ORFV) is the causative agent of orf, a globally-occurring, acute, pustular, contagious disease affecting sheep, goats and humans with a worldwide distribution. Currently, the genomic analysis of four ORFV strains from the Fujian province in southern China and a NA1/11 strain isolated from the Jilin province in northeast China have been reported. However, little is known about the genomic information of ORFV strains from central China.

We present a simple text mining method that is easy to implement, requires minimal data collection and preparation, and is easy to use for proposing ranked associations between a list of target terms and a key phrase. We call this method KinderMiner, and apply it to two biomedical applications. The first application is to identify relevant transcription factors for cell reprogramming, and the second is to identify potential drugs for investigation in drug repositioning.

Small animal positron emission tomography (PET) is a well-established imaging modality in preclinical biomedical research. The performance of current small animal PET scanners is mainly limited by the detector performance and depth-encoding detectors are required to simultaneously achieve high spatial resolution and high sensitivity. In this work, the performance of a high-resolution dual-ended readout lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) array using barium sulfate powder (BaSO) as the inter-crystal reflector was measured for the first time and compared to that of a LYSO array using the most commonly used enhanced specular reflector (ESR).

SPRY domain-containing SOCS box protein 2 (SPSB2) is a negative regulator of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) that modulates the lifetime of iNOS and thus the levels of nitric oxide (NO) production. Inhibitors that can disrupt the endogenous SPSB2-iNOS interaction and augment NO production have potential as novel antimicrobial and anticancer drugs. In this study, we have designed a cyclic peptide (cR8), containing an RGD motif and the SPSB2 binding motif (DINNNV).

Computational Drug Repositioning (CDR) is the knowledge discovery process of finding new indications for existing drugs leveraging heterogeneous drug-related data. Longitudinal observational data such as Electronic Health Records (EHRs) have become an emerging data source for CDR. To address the high-dimensional, irregular, subject and time-heterogeneous nature of EHRs, we propose Baseline Regularization (BR) and a variant that extend the one-way fixed effect model, which is a standard approach to analyze small-scale longitudinal data.

We previously reported that three point mutations in SASH1 and mutated SASH1 promote melanocyte migration in dyschromatosis universalis hereditaria (DUH) and a novel p53/POMC/Gαs/SASH1 autoregulatory positive feedback loop is regulated by SASH1 mutations to induce pathological hyperpigmentation phenotype. However, the underlying mechanism of molecular regulation to cause this hyperpigmentation disorder still remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the molecular mechanism undergirding hyperpigmentation in the dyschromatosis disorder.
