We propose an effective method for selectively extracting the valuable metals from the spent LiNiCoMnO cathode material using an oxalic acid-based deep eutectic solvent. Through regulation of the coordination environment, NiO, CoO, and MnO are stepwise separated and further applied in the electrochemical conversion of raw PET bottles to high-purity formic acid.

Spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are an essential secondary resource containing valuable metal elements. Transforming spent LIBs into efficient catalysts through a simple process presents a promising strategy to address both metal resource scarcity and clean energy challenges. Herein, a deep eutectic solvent-assisted synthesis of CoO material from spent LIBs is proposed.

The controls governing the availability of reduced selenium (Se) species, namely selenite (Se[IV]) and dissolved organo-Se (DOSe), to primary producers at the sediment-water interface in depositional environments (i.e., lentic systems) were assessed through consideration of theoretical principles and field data.

Air pollution episodes (APEs) caused by excessive emissions from chemical industry parks (CIPs) have resulted in severe environmental damage in recent years. Therefore, it is of great importance to detect APEs timely and effectively using contaminant measurements from the air quality monitoring network (AQMN) in the CIP. Traditionally, APE can be detected by determining whether the contaminant concentration at any ambient monitoring station exceeds the national environmental standard.

Correction for 'Concentrations and properties of ice nucleating substances in exudates from Antarctic sea-ice diatoms' by Yu Xi , , 2021, , 323-334, DOI: 10.1039/D0EM00398K.

Ablation of para-hisian accessory pathways (APs) remains challenging due to anatomic characteristics, and a few studies have focused on the causes for recurrence of radiofrequency ablation of para-hisian APs. This retrospective single center study aimed to explore the risk factors for recurrence of para-hisian APs. One hundred thirteen patients who had para-hisian AP with an acute success were enrolled in the study.

The ocean contains ice nucleating substances (INSs), some of which can be emitted to the atmosphere where they can influence the formation and properties of clouds. A possible source of INSs in the ocean is exudates from sea-ice diatoms. Here we examine the concentrations and properties of INSs in supernatant samples from dense sea-ice diatom communities collected from Ross Sea and McMurdo Sound in the Antarctic.

Background: Limited data are available on the risk ratios for fatal cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcome from gout and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in non-diabetic individuals.

Methods: Nationwide population-based retrospective prospective study with a 5-year follow-up to investigate the association between physician-diagnosed gout and CKD in non-diabetics aged 50 and above who had no pre-existing serious CVD and the subsequent risk of death from CVD. Hazard ratios (HR) of CVD mortality were adjusted for gender, age, smoking- and alcoholism-related diagnoses, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, atrial fibrillation and Charlson's comorbidity index score.

Background: Cancer survival studies are commonly analyzed using survival-time prediction models for cancer prognosis. A number of different performance metrics are used to ascertain the concordance between the predicted risk score of each patient and the actual survival time, but these metrics can sometimes conflict. Alternatively, patients are sometimes divided into two classes according to a survival-time threshold, and binary classifiers are applied to predict each patient's class.

Background: The complexity of the human plasma proteome represents a substantial challenge for biomarker discovery. Proteomic analysis of genetically engineered mouse models of cancer and isolated cancer cells and cell lines provide alternative methods for identification of potential cancer markers that would be detectable in human blood using sensitive assays. The goal of this work is to evaluate the utility of an integrative strategy using these two approaches for biomarker discovery.

Statistics for risk assessment of chemical carcinogens.

March 2008

Risk assessment is a scientific process of evaluation of potential health risks of chemical exposures to humans from available information. It involves analysis of the relationship between exposure and health related outcomes to derive an allowable exposure level. Because of lack of human exposure data, the major source of information for studying potential health effects of chemicals on humans is generally obtained from animal dose response experiments.
