Switchable Synthesis of Tritylone Alcohols and 2-Benzoylbenzoate Esters from Spiroindane-1,3-diones.

A solvent-controlled regioselective rearrangement reaction of spiroindane-1,3-diones with a leaving group has been developed. In acetonitrile solvent, the spiroindane-1,3-diones were rearranged to provide tritylone alcohols, while 2-benzoylbenzoate ester derivatives were obtained if the reactions were performed in alcohols.

Bench-Scale Stirred-Tank Bioreactor for Recombinant Protein Production in Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) Cells in Suspension.

Most pharmaceutical biotechnology companies use stirred-tank bioreactors (STR) for recombinant protein manufacturing. These bioreactors are used at a variety of different scales ranging from bench to production scales, with working volumes from 10 mL to 25,000 L. Bench-scale STRs are commonly used to culture mammalian cells for process development, to troubleshoot production scale bioreactors using scale-down models (SDM), or to conduct fundamental research.

Background: The role of familial influence in chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) occurrence is less defined. Previously, we conducted a study to determine the prevalence of harbouring BCR::ABL1 in our local adult normal population (designated as Study). We present our current study, which investigated the prevalence of harbouring BCR::ABL1 in the normal first-degree relatives of local CML patients (designated as Study).

Spinal column radiological factors associated with increased spinal cord intramedullary signal intensity - A study evaluating aging spinal cord's relation to spinal disc degeneration.

Purpose: Increased intramedullary signal intensity (IISI) on T2 weighted MRI scan (T2WI) can be a radiological feature of spinal cord degeneration. However, the association of IISI to degeneration of the spinal column that protects the spinal cord remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of IISI and analyze the independent relationship between IISI and cervical degenerative parameters on X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Reconsidering high intensity zones: its role in intervertebral disk degeneration and low back pain.

Purpose: High intensity zones (HIZ) in the lumbar intervertebral disk (IVD) can be associated with degenerative changes which may ultimately manifest as low back pain (LBP). However, the relationship between the prevalence of HIZ and lumbar degenerative parameters is still unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of HIZ in the lumbar spine, analyze the independent relationship between HIZ and lumbar degenerative parameters measured on MRI and X-ray and determine the association between HIZ and the presence of LBP.

Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases play a pivotal role in catalyzing the precise coupling of amino acids with their corresponding tRNAs. Among them, Tyrosyl tRNA synthetase, encoded by the YARS1 gene, facilitates the aminoacylation of tyrosine to its designated tRNA. Heterozygous variants in the YARS1 gene have been linked to autosomal dominant Charcot-Marie-Tooth type C, while recent findings have unveiled biallelic YARS1 variants leading to an autosomal recessive multisystemic disorder in several cases.

Enzymatic Characterization of a Novel HSL Family IV Esterase EstD04 from sp. D01 in Mealworm Gut Microbiota.

sp. D01, capable of growing in tributyrin medium, was isolated from the gut microbiota of yellow mealworm. By using in silico analyses, we discovered a hypothesized esterase encoding gene in the D01 bacterium, and its encoded protein, EstD04, was classified as a bacterial hormone-sensitive lipase (bHSL) of the type IV lipase family.

The measurement of mental fatigue following an overnight on-call duty among doctors using electroencephalogram.

This study aimed to measure the spectral power differences in the brain rhythms among a group of hospital doctors before and after an overnight on-call duty. Thirty-two healthy doctors who performed regular on-call duty in a tertiary hospital in Sarawak, Malaysia were voluntarily recruited into this study. All participants were interviewed to collect relevant background information, followed by a self-administered questionnaire using Chalder Fatigue Scale and electroencephalogram test before and after an overnight on-call duty.

The epidemiology of haematological cancers in Sarawak, Malaysia (1996 to 2015).

Background: Published epidemiological studies of haematological cancers are few. Hereby we present a 20-year epidemiological data of haematological cancers in Sarawak from a population-based cancer registry.

Methods: Haematological cancer cases with ICD-10 coded C81-C96 and ICD-O coded /3 diagnosed from 1996 to 2015 were retrieved from Sarawak Cancer Registry.

Analysis of clinically relevant variants from ancestrally diverse Asian genomes.

Asian populations are under-represented in human genomics research. Here, we characterize clinically significant genetic variation in 9051 genomes representing East Asian, South Asian, and severely under-represented Austronesian-speaking Southeast Asian ancestries. We observe disparate genetic risk burden attributable to ancestry-specific recurrent variants and identify individuals with variants specific to ancestries discordant to their self-reported ethnicity, mostly due to cryptic admixture.

The Effects of Interactive eBooks on Dyspnea Assessment and Management among Emergency Medical Technicians: A Repeated-Measures Analysis.

Dyspnea is a common emergency requiring urgent care, and a variety of factors may mislead emergency medical technicians (EMTs). Typically, EMT education uses traditional lectures with paper books. The effect of interactive eBooks on EMT learning has not been explored.

A Case Report of Leptomeningeal Myelomatosis and Rapid Improvement with Regimen Consisting of Daratumumab, Pomalidomide, Vincristine, Procarbazine, and Dexamethasone.

Central nervous system (CNS) involvement in multiple myeloma (MM) (MM-CNS) in the form of leptomeningeal myelomatosis or brain parenchyma plasmacytoma is rare, causing challenges in clinical diagnosis and treatment. We would like to report a case of leptomeningeal myelomatosis and illustrated the challeges. A 61-year-old man was diagnosed with MM with left paravertebral plasmacytoma, R-ISS II with high suspicion of double-hit MM, either biallelic aberrancy of TP53 or del(17p) and IGH aberrancy depending on the definition chosen, treated with lenalidomide-bortezomib-dexamethasone and local radiotherapy, later developed systemic relapse and progression to MM-CNS in the form of leptomeningeal myelomatosis.

Deploying elements of scoping review methods for adverse outcome pathway development: a space travel case example.

Purpose: Health protection agencies require scientific information for evidence-based decision-making and guideline development. However, vetting and collating large quantities of published research to identify relevant high-quality studies is a challenge. One approach to address this issue is the use of adverse outcome pathways (AOPs) that provide a framework to assemble toxicological knowledge into causally linked chains of key events (KEs) across levels of biological organization to culminate in an adverse health outcome of significance to regulatory decision-making.

Radiographic evaluation of lumbar intervertebral disc height index: An intra and inter-rater agreement and reliability study.

Purpose: To evaluate intra- and inter-rater agreement and reliability of seven reported disc height index (DHI) measurement methods on standing lateral X-ray of lumbar spine.

Methods: The adult patients who had standing lateral X-ray of lumbar spine were recruited. Seven methods were used to measure DHI of each lumbar intervertebral disc level, including a ratio of sum of anterior and posterior disc height (DH) to disc diameter (Method 1), a ratio of middle DH to mid-vertebral body height (Method 2), a ratio of middle DH to disc diameter (Method 3), a ratio of the mean of anterior, middle, and posterior DH to the sagittal diameter of the proximal vertebral body (Method 4), a ratio of DH to vertebral height which cross the centre of adjacent vertebral bodies (Method 5), a ratio of the mean of anterior, middle, and posterior DH to the mean of proximal and distal vertebral body height (Method 6), and a ratio of the sum of anterior and posterior DH to the sum of superior and inferior disc depth (Method 7).

Adsorption-enhanced photocatalytic property of Ag-doped biochar/g-C3N4/TiO2 composite by incorporating cotton-based biochar.

In this study, the biochar obtained from waste cotton fibers was introduced into the Ag-doped g-C3N4/TiO2 hybrid composite through a facile one-step hydrothermal process. The morphology, elemental composition, crystal structure, microstructure, specific surface area, chemical bonding state, energy band structure, and separation efficiency of photoinduced charge carriers of the resultant composite were examined using scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, X-ray diffractometer, transmission electron microscope, surface area analyzer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscope, Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscope, and photoluminescence spectroscope. The adsorption isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics of the biochar, Ag-doped g-C3N4/TiO2 and Ag-doped biochar/g-C3N4/TiO2 were evaluated using the model methyl orange dye.

Structure-activity relationship studies of allosteric inhibitors of EYA2 tyrosine phosphatase.

Human eyes absent (EYA) proteins possess Tyr phosphatase activity, which is critical for numerous cancer and metastasis promoting activities, making it an attractive target for cancer therapy. In this work, we demonstrate that the inhibitor-bound form of EYA2 does not favour binding to Mg , which is indispensable for the Tyr phosphatase activity. We further describe characterization and optimization of this class of allosteric inhibitors.
