A human bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library was constructed with high molecular weight DNA extracted from the blood of a male Korean. This Korean BAC library contains 100,224 clones of insert size ranging from 70 to 150 kb, with an average size of 86 kb, corresponding to a 2.9-fold redundancy of the genome.

Although the prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and its relationship with respiratory symptoms are well documented, few studies have focused on individuals with normal lung function, particularly in developed regions of Asia. The purpose of this report is to examine the relationship between respiratory symptoms and FEV1 in a population-based sample of Korean men and women with normal lung function. Subjects comprised 7518 individuals aged 40-69 years without airflow obstruction based on spirometric testing and in the absence of a medical history of pulmonary disease.

Habitual snoring is associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and metabolic abnormalities such as impaired glucose homeostasis. Many studies were performed in obese Western populations. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of habitual snoring with glucose and insulin metabolism in nonobese Korean men who were free of diabetes and hypertension.

Certain irinoid-producing plants have been used as herbal anti-inflammatory remedies. Here we evaluated whether catalposide (CATP), a single compound isolated from irinoid-producing plant Catalpa ovata, has a potential for preventing or ameliorating diseases characterized by mucosal inflammation. Preliminary microarray-based gene expression test revealed that CATP, which alone did not significantly affect expression of any of the >8,000 genes analyzed, attenuated the expression of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha)-induced proinflammatory genes including interleukin-8 (IL-8) in human intestinal epithelial HT-29 cells.
