The most frequent reason of seizures in elderly are vascular diseases of the brain. The early-onset seizures occur in first 7 days after stroke, and the late-onset seizures occur after 7 days after stroke. The aim of the study was to estimate the frequency of seizures in patients who have taken a stand in acute period of stroke, the incidence of seizures in different types of stroke, the frequency of the types of seizures and the risk of death depending on the type of seizure.

Recent data from the literature suggest a greater role of chronic venous insufficiency in the pathogenesis of a variety of brain disorders than previously thought. The more perfect method of imaging the structure and brain function contributed to it. The method of choice in the diagnosis of cerebral venous insufficiency are: Color Doppler of neck vessels, TCCD (transcranial color coded duplex) and TOF (time of flight) MR angiography of the brain and carotid vessels.

The aim of this study was to verify if diagnostic lumbar puncture (DLP) in post-lumbar puncture headache (PLPH) patients is related to significant changes in cerebral blood flow which could be visualized by transcranial Doppler (TCD). Sixty-six patients were enrolled in this study. TCD was performed 24 h before DLP and repeated within 24 h after the procedure.

Background: Transcranial color-coded sonography (TCCS) allows the visualization of cerebral structures and enables monitoring of circulatory disorders occurring within the circle of Willis.

Objective: To verify whether TCCS is a reliable method in imaging intracerebral hemorrhages (ICHs) and to what degree its results are consistent with these by means of computed tomography (CT).

Methods: This study included 39 patients with spontaneous ICHs of supratentorial and infratentorial locations.

Metamorphopsia is a visual illusion related to the perception of an object's shape, size, colour or angle. Reversal of vision metamorphopsia is a rare, transient form of metamorphopsia described as an inversion of the field of vision, usually a 180-degree reversion within the frontal plane. We describe the case of a 64-year-old male patient who first experienced a 90-degree rotation of the field of vision and then had the impression of his body rotating in space.

Research into outcomes from surgical intervention for intracranial aneurysms have focused on the clinical picture of the disease entity and death rate, comparison of different surgical methods, as well as the most common postoperative and postbleeding complications. From the nursing standpoint, the crucial element in assessing postoperative patients is the broadly understood functional outcome defining patients' ability to function in life, while at the same time recognising the impairments, in which patients will be dependent on the nursing staff. The aim of the study was to assess the functional outcomes of patients in the days following the surgical treatment.

In two patients with headache and seeing disorders on the basis of angio-MR examination venous thrombosis and thrombosinusitis of the brain and of internal jugular was diagnosed. The cases presented pay direct attention at the disproportion between the scope of the thrombotic process and a low-symptom and nonspecific clinical picture. In the first case after applying standard heparin, we obtained a nearly complete recanalisation of the vessels; in the second patient after application of low-molecular-weight heparin recanalisation didn't occur.

Background: Prophylactic examinations of workers formerly employed in asbestos processing plants were performed by virtue of the Act, dated 19 June 1997, putting a ban on the production of asbestos-containing products. To enforce the provisions of the Act, the Ministry of Health has initiated the Amiantus project implemented by 13 Occupational Medicine Centers throughout the country and coordinated by the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine (IMP) in Lódź.

Material And Methods: All the Centers perform diagnostic procedures according to the same criteria (clinical, radiological, spirometric and histological), based on the 1997 Helsinki criteria, to diagnose asbestos-related diseases.

A 61-year man showed symptoms of conus medullaris and cauda equina syndrome. MR examination of spine and spinal cord SL section showed changes in medullary cone of ischaemial character. Spinal cord injury was probably caused by thrombosis of spinal cord venous vessels, which developed, with diabetes of the second type, in the result of appendectomy complicated by peritonitis and thrombosis of deep veins of the right shank.

About 20% of patients treated because of craniocerebral injuries are those after an alcohol intake. Great number of these patients slightly bodily injured without any focal cerebral deficit are stopped by police. The effects of injuries masked by the picture of alcohol intoxication are developed during that time.

Extracerebral complications which were observed in great number of ischemic stroke patients increased the risk of death and disability. Pneumonia, myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolisms and urinary tract infections are most often. We considered the influences of extracerebral complications on anterior circulation territory disturbances.

A new model of the computerized encephalovolumeter (EVM.IR) is presented. Infrared light is used as an information carrier enabling to follow the dynamics of intracerebral equilibrium and blood flow disorders.

It was noted that physical activity of 1052 patients hospitalized for the acute cerebral flow failure due to atheromatosis is an important indicator of the cerebral ischemia. Extension of ischemia evaluated on the basis of physical activity enables to foresee possible improvement and survival. Authors' own classification of physical activity may be helpful in the monitoring of cerebral flow failure therapy.

Consciousness disorders are closely related to the general dysfunction of the brain stem, and called by some authors brain stem insufficiency. To evaluate the degree of brain stem dysfunction, an original scale has been elaborated. Each group of brain stem functions are scored.

A knowledge of events accompanying the acute coronary failure may help understanding the acute cerebral blood flow insufficiency leading to brain infarction. Cerebral blood flow should be treated as an integral part of the systemic blood circulation. It is of importance when the disease produces lesions to the vascular wall, and the brain looses its autoregulation functions.
