Article Synopsis
  • The process of epithelization is essential for restoring the structural and functional integrity of epithelial tissue during regeneration.
  • Calcareous sponges, like Leucosolenia variabilis, form a temporary regenerative membrane at wound sites through unique cellular rearrangements involving actin and microtubules.
  • The study uses imaging techniques to analyze the dynamic changes in cell morphology and cytoskeletal arrangements during this regeneration process, revealing significant transformations in cell shapes and functions as the sponge heals.

Tissues of multicellular animals are maintained due to a tight balance between cell proliferation and programmed cell death. Sponges are early branching metazoans essential to understanding the key mechanisms of tissue homeostasis. This article is dedicated to the comparative analysis of proliferation and apoptosis in intact tissues of two sponges, Halisarca dujardinii (class Demospongiae) and Leucosolenia variabilis (class Calcarea).
