Commercial suitability and characterization of newly developed Erucastrum canariense (Can) sterile cytoplasm based cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) lines in Indian cauliflower.

The study presents the first to characterize novel Erucastrum canarianse Webb and Berthel (or Can) sterile cytoplasm-based CMS lines in Indian cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis L.) and investigating their commercial suitability.

Facile manufacturing of fused-deposition modeled composite scaffolds for tissue engineering-an embedding model with plasticity for incorporation of additives.

The fused-deposition modeling (FDM) process is carried out at an elevated temperature, preventing the addition of biological factors, drugs, bioactive compounds, etc, during fabrication. To overcome this disadvantage, a 3D interlinked porous polylactic acid (PLA) scaffold was fabricated by FDM, followed by the embedding of a polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffold into the pores of the PLA at room temperature, yielding a PLA-PCL scaffold. In addition, PLA-PCL scaffolds with nanohydroxyapatite (PLA-PCL-nHAP) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PLA-PCL-MWCNT) were also fabricated.

Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles using pre-hydrolysis liquor of Eucalyptus wood and its effective antimicrobial activity.

Herein, we described for the first time, biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using pre-hydrolyzed liquor of Eucalyptus wood under ambient conditions. The pre-hydrolyzed liquor containing a high amount of metabolites such as polyphenols, hemicelluloses and its derivatives are mainly assisted for the reduction and stabilization process of Ag+ ions to AgNPs. The formation of AgNPs is monitored by recording the UV-vis spectrophotometer for surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak observed at ∼415nm.

HRCT diagnosis of combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema in a patient of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with pulmonary hypertension and clinical or radiograph suspicion of pulmonary fibrosis.

Combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema (CPFE) is a unique pulmonary condition characterized by simultaneous coexistence of both upper lobe emphysema and lower lobe fibrosis. Pulmonologists should be aware of the entity while evaluating patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or pulmonary fibrosis. Airflow and lung volume are relatively preserved but oxygenation is disproportionately impaired in patients with CPFE.

Rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) with internal carotid artery stenosis in a diabetic patient with caries tooth and oroantral fistula.

Mucormycosis is a rare, potentially fatal and opportunistic infection caused by fungi belonging to the order Mucorales. Rhinocerebral, gastrointestinal, pulmonary, cutaneous and disseminated are the different forms of mucormycosis. Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is the most common type and presents as a highly destructive infection in immunocompromised hosts, especially in patients with poorly controlled diabetes.

Evaluation of radiological methods of assessing cup anteversion in total hip replacement.

Study Design: Prospective clinical study.

Back Ground: In total hip replacement, the placement of the cup is critical as inaccurate placement can cause impingement, accelerated wear and dislocations. The position of the cup is assessed by abduction and anteversion.

Imaging diagnosis of isolated proximal interruption of the right pulmonary artery in a patient presenting with respiratory complications following travel to a high-altitude region.

Proximal interruption of the pulmonary artery (PA) is a rare congenital vascular anomaly with an estimated prevalence of 1 in 200,000 young adults. Patients with isolated proximal interruption of the right PA are usually asymptomatic but can present with breathlessness, haemoptysis, recurrent chest infections, pulmonary hypertension or respiratory failure. Such symptoms may be unmasked by pregnancy or at high altitude.

Evaluation of alignment in total knee arthroplasty: a prospective study.

Background: Successful results of knee arthroplasty demand precise surgical technique, sound implant design, kinematics, appropriate materials and patient compliance with rehabilitation. The precision with which the implants are placed directly affects patient outcome as implant position and alignment influence the stability, durability and patellar tracking. Evaluating the alignment in total knee arthroplasty and functional outcome with respect to the alignment is the need of the hour.

'Potato peel dressing': a novel adjunctive in the management of necrotizing fasciitis.

Management of necrotizing fasciitis, a rare and potentially fatal, polymicrobial disease comprises of aggressive debridement, intravenous antibiotics and application of various adjunctives. So far adjunctives like hyperbaric oxygen therapy, intravenous immunoglobulins, vacuum assisted or foam dressing, and guided tissue regeneration with amniotic dressing have been put to use. Each of these adjunctives has faced criticism for their shortcomings.

Unusual oral complications of herpes zoster infection: report of a case and review of literature.

A case of herpes zoster infection with unusual oral complications involving the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve is presented. The post-herpetic complications of osteonecrosis, spontaneous exfoliation of teeth, and subsequent pathologic fracture of mandible in the absence of concurrent predisposing factors in a 65-year-old man are demonstrated. Forty-one cases with osteonecrosis and spontaneous exfoliation of teeth previously presented in the literature are reviewed.

Comparison of 3-dimensional and standard miniplate fixation in the management of mandibular fractures.

Purpose: The aim of this follow-up study was to compare 3-dimensional (3D) and standard (Champy's) miniplate fixation in the management of mandibular fractures, and to analyze advantages and disadvantages of one over the other.

Patients And Methods: A prospective randomized clinical trial was carried out in patients with well-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients were followed for 2 months for wound dehiscence, infection, segmental mobility, postoperative occlusion, significant period of postoperative complications, and radiological evaluation of reduction and fixation.

Outcomes of Ilizarov ring fixation in recalcitrant infected tibial non-unions - a prospective study.

Background: Infected non-union of long bones is a problem in the developing countries. Persistent infection, deformity, shortening, bone loss, joint stiffness and disability complicate the non-union. Secondary procedures are often required for correction of bone defects and deformity.

Jarcho-Levin syndrome.

Jarcho-Levin syndrome is an eponym that represents a spectrum of short trunk skeletal dysplasias with variable involvement of the vertebrae and ribs. Initially considered to be lethal, it is now accepted as compatible with life in its milder presentations. Here are reported two neonates with the lethal variety of this syndrome.

Synthesis and evaluation of 2-chloromethyl-3-N-substituted arylthieno (2,3-d)pyrimidin-4-ones and derivatives for central nervous system depressant activity.

2-Chloromethyl 3-N-substituted arylthieno (2,3-d)pyrimidin-4-ones and derivatives were synthesized by reacting 2-amino-3-carboxanilido-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzo(b)thiophenes (Iabc) with chloroacetyl chloride in dioxane and by cyclizing the open chain 3-substituted carboxanilido-2-(omega-chloroacetamido)-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobe nzo(b)thiophenes (IIabc) under acidic condition. The compounds were characterized by their spectral data and screened for central nervous system depressant activity. The compounds IIIabc and Vabc have shown marked sedative action.
