Aberrant host immune responses to bacterial components of the resident microflora may initiate and perpetuate gastrointestinal inflammation. To investigate how microbial perturbation promotes host immunological responsiveness to commensal bacteria and contributes to the development of typhlocolitis, we selectively colonized defined (altered Schaedler) flora C3H mice with either Helicobacter bilis or Brachyspira hyodysenteriae. Following selective colonization, tissues were analyzed for gross/histopathologic lesions and bacterial antigen-specific B- and T-cell responses.
