Next to tonic-clonic seizures psychomotor (complex focal) seizures are the most common form of all epileptic seizures, except in infancy where they are seen rarely. Differently from generalised non convulsive seizures (like petit mal absences), their first appearance has no typical age limit, however, their proportion to other forms of seizures increases in adolescence and adults especially between the third and fifth decade of life. The main symptom is the disorder of consciousness which lasts at least more than half a minute, normally several minutes in completely distinct seizures, which doesn't begin abruptly and which often ends ill defined.

Theoretically, slow acting antirheumatic drugs are capable of affecting the body's infection resistance. We have therefore analyzed the records of all 558 RA-patients hospitalized and operated on at our department from 1985-1987 with respect to the incidence of post-surgical wound infections and possible links to previous treatment with slow acting antirheumatic drugs. A total of 2456 operations were performed, or 4.

A new method of oblique tibial metaphyseal osteotomy that uses a single osteotomy cut has been used to allow correction of multiplanar rotational deformities in children. Graphs are used to predict the necessary angle of osteotomy. The osteotomy is performed through a 1-cm incision in the proximal tibial metaphysis, using multiple drill holes and an osteotome.

From 1984-1987, 12 quality control surveys on photometric measurements were carried out in 600-800 laboratories. The participants measured the photometric absorbance of the control samples at 4 wavelengths of the mercury spectrum: 334.1 nm, 365.

The reliability of bilirubin analyses is especially important in cases of neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia. However, when the means of the results of external quality control surveys and the method-dependent stated values for control sera were compared with reference method values, differences of up to 10% were found. Further inaccuracy arose from interlaboratory imprecision, which showed coefficients of variation of at least 7%, and from greater or lesser interference from contamination of samples with haemoglobin.

This paper presents the results of a joint European external quality control survey for thyrotropin determinations in blood dried on filter paper, carried out in 1986 in cooperation with several national quality control organizations. For the evaluation, 124 participants presented their individual diagnostic classifications in addition to their analytical results. Although, in relation to earlier studies of this kind, there was a significant improvement in interlaboratory precision the results still showed variance which depended on the analytical method and, possibly on the country in which it was performed.

Within the quality control scheme of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Klinische Chemie, seven quality control surveys of thyrotropin (TSH) determinations in blood dried on filter paper have been carried out since 1980. Ninety-six screening laboratories from 12 European countries took part in these surveys. In a single survey each participant usually analysed four different samples; each of these consisted of three spots of dried blood spiked with defined amounts of thyrotropin.

A digestion method for determination of total mercury in fish is described, which is economical, simple and reliable. Digestion is carried out by wet ashing with HNO3/HClO3/HClO4 in the presence of chloric acid. The procedure can be carried out at normal pressure in test tubes without suffering losses of Hg.

The incidence of biochemical signs of vitamin D deficiency and the effects of vitamin D supplementation were investigated in 83 children and 95 adults on chronic antiepileptic therapy and 40 mentally retarded controls living under comparable conditions. Low 25-hydroxyvitamin D and serum calcium, and elevated immunoreactive parathyroid hormone and alkaline phosphatase was a common finding in all groups, but in patients on antiepileptic drugs, signs of vitamin D deficiency were recorded more frequently. Supplementation of 125 microgram or 250 microgram vitamin D3 per week for 9 months normalized the laboratory findings in most patients; the effect of 37.

The effects of specific immunotherapy with allogeneic cells transformed by Schmidt-Ruppin Rous sarcoma virus (SR-RSV), of treatment with BCG, and of surgery on the growth of SR-RSV-induced sarcomas in white-lipped marmosets were studied. Tumor incidence, tumor progression, and survival did not differ between control and treated animals. Animals immunized with BCG developed lymphocyte reactivity to tuberculin, which remained until the animals died.
