Elongator is a microtubule polymerase selective for polyglutamylated tubulin.

Elongator is a tRNA-modifying complex that regulates protein translation. Recently, a moonlighting function of Elongator has been identified in regulating the polarization of the microtubule cytoskeleton during asymmetric cell division. Elongator induces symmetry breaking of the anaphase midzone by selectively stabilizing microtubules on one side of the spindle, contributing to the downstream polarized segregation of cell-fate determinants, and therefore to cell fate determination.

Hydrogen Diffusion in Deformed Austenitic TRIP Steel-A Study of Mathematical Prediction and Experimental Validation.

This study focuses on the effect of pre-deformation on hydrogen diffusion and hydrogen embrittlement of the high alloy austenitic TRIP steel X3CrMnNiMo17-8-4. Different cold-rolled steel sheets with thicknesses of ≤400 µm were electrochemically charged on both sides in 0.1 M sodium hydroxide with hydrogen for two weeks.

Synthetic Engineering of Cortical Polarity During Mitosis Using Designed Proteins.

During asymmetric cell division, cortical polarity cues drive the polarization of the microtubule cytoskeleton to ensure the generation of two daughter cells with different fates. While this a critical process for development and tissue homeostasis, the underlying molecular mechanisms orchestrating those processes are not completely understood, especially in mammals. Here, we present an assay that allows the study of the molecular mechanisms driving mammalian asymmetric cell division in a high-throughput manner by capitalizing on protein design to engineer cortical polarity of virtually any protein of interest in otherwise unpolarized mammalian culture cells.

Safety of Intraoperative Cell Salvage in Two-Stage Revision of Septic Hip Arthroplasties.

(1) Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of intraoperative cell salvage (ICS) during reimplantation in the two-stage revision of septic hip arthroplasties. (2) Methods: As part of an internal quality control study, blood cultures were taken from the processed ICS blood during reimplantation and examined for possible bacterial load (study group). Due to a high rate of bacterial detection with uncertain clinical significance, consecutive ICS samples were also examined from patients undergoing aseptic revision hip arthroplasty (control group).

Primary nursing in the intensive care unit.

Primary nursing (Process Responsible Nursing; PRN) is a nursing organization model, practiced in intensive care units (ICUs), but implementation is challenging. This paper focuses on the qualitative process analysis of the development and implementation of PRN in an ICU at a German university hospital. Aim was to record the perception of changes in nursing practice due to the introduction of PRN and obtain information on implementation and further optimization perceived by nurses.

[Skill-grade mix and shared governance in the intensive care unit: development of a management triangle and the advancement of nursing roles].

Background: In the Federal Republic of Germany, it has been possible for some years to study (intensive) nursing care alongside further training in intensive care and anaesthesia. This results in a nursing skill-grade mix in the intensive care unit (ICU), which nursing management must consider.

Objectives: The aim is to show the development and implementation of a new nursing management structure in the ICU and also provide an overview of the parallel role development with preliminary results at a university hospital.

Background: Brain activation to motor commands is seen in 15% of clinically unresponsive patients with acute brain injury. This state called cognitive motor dissociation (CMD) is detectable by electroencephalogram (EEG) or functional magnetic resonance imaging, predicts long-term recovery, and is recommended by recent guidelines to support prognostication. However, false negative CMD results are a particular concern, and occult aphasia in clinically unresponsive patients may be a major factor.

Ecologists are being challenged to predict how ecosystems will respond to climate changes. According to the Multi-Colored World (MCW) hypothesis, climate impacts may not manifest because consumers such as fire and herbivory can override the influence of climate on ecosystem state. One MCW interpretation is that climate determinism fails because alternative ecosystem states (AES) are possible at some locations in climate space.

Pediatric Carotid Injury after Blunt Trauma and the Necessity of CT and CTA-A Narrative Literature Review.

Blunt carotid injury (BCI) in pediatric trauma is quite rare. Due to the low number of cases, only a few reports and studies have been conducted on this topic. This review will discuss how frequent BCI/blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI) on pediatric patients after blunt trauma is, what routine diagnostics looks like, if a computed tomography (CT)/computed tomography angiography (CTA) scan on pediatric patients after blunt trauma is always necessary and if there are any negative health effects.

[Effects of nursing visits on primary nursing : An evaluation study in an intensive care unit].

Background: After a pilot phase in 2017, nursing visits (PV) were implemented in an intensive care unit (ICU) at a university hospital. So far, published findings on the impact of PV on the primary nursing organisation system (process-responsible nursing [PP]) could not be identified.

Aim: Primary aim was to investigate the effects of PV on PP from the nurses perspective.

Animal personality can shape individual's fitness. Yet, the mechanistic relationship by which individual's personality traits lead to variations in fitness remains largely underexplored. Here, we used novel object tests to measure boldness of chick-provisioning Cory's shearwaters (Calonectris borealis) from a coastal colony off west Portugal, and deployed GPS loggers to study their at-sea behaviour and distribution.
