Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) represent a large class of structurally diverse chemicals of increasing public concern, mostly due to their chemical stability and undetermined toxicity profiles. In laboratory animals, adverse effects implicated for certain PFAS, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in particular, include liver toxicity and the associated metabolic dysregulation, immune and thyroid alterations, reproductive toxicity, and selected tumors. The broad commercialization and environmental distribution of PFAS has drawn attention to the need for understanding risks associated with combined exposure to multiple PFAS in complex mixtures.

Asphaltene deposition in petroleum refineries is known to be problematic as it reduces efficiency and may lead to structural failure or production downtime. Though several successful approaches have been utilized to limit deposition through the addition of dispersants and inhibitors to petroleum, these methods require constant intervention and are often expensive. In this study, we demonstrate an innovative technique to engineer the surface chemistry of pipeline steels to inhibit asphaltene deposition.

We report on the synthesis of metallic nickel-molybdenum-tungsten films with direct current sputter deposition, which results in fully dense crystallographically textured films that are filled with nanotwins. These films exhibit linear elastic mechanical behavior and tensile strengths exceeding 3 GPa, which is unprecedented for materials that are compatible with wafer-level device fabrication processes.

At day 28, the overall clinical cure rate was 206 of 242 (85%). Clinical cure rates for patients infected with Streptococcus pneumoniae (67 of 76; 88%) and Haemophilus influenzae (28 of 44; 64%) were consistent with historical rates for the 5-day dosing regimen.

This technology may also be useful to extend neuropsychological services to underserved areas and thereby reduce the patients' travel time and costs. In the current study, a total of 12 visual, verbal and performance tests were administered face-to-face and via videophones to 32 volunteer participants to examine the consistency and stability of test-scores when delivered via different formats.

Methods: Patients with traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular insults and hypoxic brain injury, categorized into four lesion localization groups: left hemisphere damage (LHD); right hemisphere damage (RHD); bilateral hemispheric damage (BHD); and subcortical damage (SCD) were assessed with the Apathy Evaluation Scale (AES) and Montgomery and Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS). Heart rate and electrodermal activity were recorded in an experimental situation that exposed the patients to mental stressors in order to measure psychophysiological reactivity.

A shipyard worker was doing welding work inside a pipe with argon as cover gas. After taking a break he fainted while controlling the weld, also inside the pipe. He was rescued after 15-20 minutes and regained consciousness after a few hours.

72 patients with sequelae after severe traumatic brain injury were studied during primary rehabilitation and two years post-injury. The patients were grouped into two main categories, one dependent as regards activities of daily living (ADL) and one mainly independent group. Most of the dependent patients, except seven low level patients close to a vegetative state, showed marked functional recovery.
