Interplay between bone marrow adiposity and bone resorption in RANKL-mediated modelled osteoporosis.

Bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) accrues in osteoporosis, whereas its contribution to the progression of bone resorption remains insufficiently understood. To understand the mechanisms that promote BMAT expansion in osteoporosis, in the present study, we performed extensive analysis of the spatiotemporal pattern of BMAT expansion during the progression of bone resorption in TgRANKL transgenic mouse models of osteoporosis expressing human RANKL (receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand). Our results showed that TgRANKL mice of both sexes developed dramatically increased BMAT expansion compared to wild-type (WT) littermates, that was analogous to the levels of RANKL expression and the severity of the bone loss phenotype.

Using Community-Based Participatory Research to Conduct a Collaborative Needs Assessment of Mental Health Service Users: Identifying Research Questions and Building Academic-Community Trust.

Attempts to meaningfully engage people with serious mental illnesses (SMI) as allies in conducting research have often failed because researchers tend to decide on the research topic without including community members. Academic researchers can avoid this pitfall by collaborating with community members to conduct a needs assessment to identify relevant research topics and build trust. Here, we report on the results of a psychosocial needs assessment for adult mental health service users in Massachusetts conducted by an academic-peer research team.

Because national organizations recommend starting the vaccine at different ages, we sought to understand the impact of these recommendation frames. In 2022, we surveyed 2,527 US clinical staff (45% physicians) who provide HPV vaccine for children.

Giving parents support: a randomized trial of peer support for parents after NICU discharge.

Background: Peer support during inpatient hospitalization has been recommended for NICU parents and can improve maternal mental health. Less is known about the impact of peer support after NICU discharge on parental mental health and infant healthcare utilization.

Parental Depression Symptoms at Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Discharge and Associated Risk Factors.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence and risk factors associated with parental depressive symptoms at neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) discharge and determine the relationships among depressive symptoms, stress, and social support.

Study Design: Parents participating in the Giving Parents Support trial (n = 300) were surveyed before NICU discharge. Depressive symptoms, stress, and social support were assessed using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10), Parental Stressor Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (PSS:NICU), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS).

Developing a Sound Body: Open Trial Results of a Group Healthy Lifestyle Intervention for Young Adults with Psychosis.

The mortality disparity for persons with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) due to cardiovascular disease is a devastating problem. Many risk factors are present in young adults with psychosis that may be ameliorated with lifestyle interventions. Sixteen participants with SSDs enrolled in an 11-week open trial of a novel lifestyle intervention comprised of group high intensity interval training exercise and health and wellness education.

The Giving Parents Support Study: A randomized clinical trial of a parent navigator intervention to improve outcomes after neonatal intensive care unit discharge.

Parents of infants hospitalized in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) experience increased anxiety and stress, which may persist after discharge. The rationale and design of a randomized clinical trial assessing the impact of a 1-year, post-discharge, peer support intervention (parent navigation) on parental mental health and infant health care utilization is described. Qualitative methods guided the adaptation of an existing parent support program to target emotional and resource-related needs of NICU families.

Operational integration in primary health care: patient encounters and workflows.

Background: Despite several countrywide attempts to strengthen and standardise the primary healthcare (PHC) system, Greece is still lacking a sustainable, policy-based model of integrated services. The aim of our study was to identify operational integration levels through existing patient care pathways and to recommend an alternative PHC model for optimum integration.

Methods: The study was part of a large state-funded project, which included 22 randomly selected PHC units located across two health regions of Greece.

Leptospirosis is a worldwide, often severe and potentially fatal zoonotic infection. Here, we present the case of a 35-year-old man with severe leptospirosis infection that was identified early and was treated effectively, with a quite impressive complete recovery. Delaying of early diagnosis and treatment is crucial for the development of an unfavorable clinical course and increases the risk of a lethal outcome.

Uncontrolled diabetes resulting in diabetic cardiomyopathy in a young male patient and eventually presenting with a stroke.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCP) is defined as the cardiovascular damage present in diabetes patients, which is characterized by myocardial dilatation and hypertrophy, as well as a decrease in the systolic and diastolic function of the left ventricle, and its presence is independent of the coexistence of ischemic heart disease or hypertension. As in the case of the patient that we present here, DCP may be subclinical for a long time, before the appearance of serious clinical symptoms, signs and complications. DCP is poorly recognized by most physicians.

Cocaine abuse has been associated with a number of psychiatric, medical and neurological complications. Here we report the case of a male patient who suffered an episode of severe muscular weakness after cocaine abuse.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease manifested by an autoimmune attack on the pancreatic beta-islet cells. It is also known that Type 1 diabetes is associated with other autoimmune diseases. The aim of the present study was to seek autoantibodies in the serum of people with Type 1 diabetes.

We compared the effects of ibandronate and pamindronate in patients with bone metastases from breast or lung cancer and we found that ibandronate is superior to pamindronate in alleviating pain, improving mobility and quality of life, and reducing bone resorption indices in patients with bone metastases from breast or lung cancer.

An atypical presentation of visceral leishmaniasis infection in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis treated with infliximab.

Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) is a cytokine, implicated in the pathogenesis of many inflammatory diseases, as well as in the immune-mediated response to infection, especially against intracellular pathogens. TNF-alpha antagonists have represented a revolution in the management of connective tissue diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. However, the use of these agents has been implicated with the emergence of a growing number of opportunistic infections.

Non-invasive assessment of the microcirculation in critically ill patients.

Sepsis is associated with abnormalities of muscle tissue oxygenation and of microvascular function. We investigated whether the technique of near-infrared spectroscopy can evaluate such abnormalities in critically ill patients and compared near-infrared spectroscopy-derived indices of critically ill patients with those of healthy volunteers. We studied 41 patients (mean age 58 +/- 22 years) and 15 healthy volunteers (mean age 49 +/- 13 years).

Efficacy of ibandronate for the treatment of skeletal events in patients with metastatic breast cancer.

Patients with breast carcinoma often develop bone metastases that carry a high risk of complications. A randomized, placebo-controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ibandronate in patients with metastatic bone disease following breast cancer. The primary efficacy end point of the study was the proportion of patients who developed skeletal-related events (SREs, defined as pathologic fracture, spinal cord compression, radiation therapy to bone, change in anti-neoplastic therapy and surgery to bone).

This study presents a rare case of a patient who developed three different types of neoplasia in an 18-year period of time. The case presents a 31-year-old man with a history of treated Hodgkin's lymphoma in the neck region at the age of 13 years. The patient was admitted at the General Hospital of Nafplio for differential diagnosis of pain in the right subcostal region initiated 1 month before his admission and normochromic, normocytic anaemia.

Effect of combined treatment methods on quality of life in patients with pancreatic cancer.
