Catatonia is a complex constellation of symptoms presenting with abnormalities in movement and behavior and arises from multiple medical, neurologic, and psychiatric conditions. In recent years, there has been a call to move catatonia from a classifier to a diagnosis of its own in the DSM-5. Catatonia is often underdiagnosed in the hospital and carries with it substantial morbidity and mortality.

Youth in crisis often present to emergency departments, but may not need or benefit from that level of care. Despite complete resection and radiation, about 50% of patients relapse and have subsequent dismal prognoses. As no clinical findings reliably forecast tumor recurrence, we sought to determine if gene expression profiling could be used to distinguish patients at high risk for relapse at initial diagnosis, and thereby make them candidates for innovative treatments at an early stage.
