Article Synopsis
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) diagnosis relies on physicians' subjective assessments of symptoms like fatigue and pain.
  • Subjects reported their symptoms on a scale from 0 to 4, with higher scores indicating more severe fatigue, and distinct criteria were established to categorize individuals into CFS or Chronic Idiopathic Fatigue (CIF).
  • The study found a strong correlation between fatigue severity and summed symptoms (Sum8), leading to refined diagnostic thresholds and insights into symptom clustering that may aid in understanding the underlying mechanisms of fatigue disorders.

Pathophysiologic differences in neural responses to hypertonic saline (HTS) were investigated in subjects with acute sinusitis (n = 25), subjects with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) with nonallergic rhinitis (n = 14), subjects with active allergic rhinitis (AR; n = 17), and normal (n = 20) subjects. Increasing strengths of HTS were sprayed into their nostrils at 5-minute intervals. Sensations of nasal pain, blockage, and drip increased with concentration and were significantly elevated above normal.
