Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated levels of symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) in hyperthyroid cats before and after receiving radioiodine treatment, along with other kidney function markers like creatinine and glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
  • Thirteen hyperthyroid cats underwent tests at different times: before treatment, one month later, and three months later, measuring various blood and urine parameters.
  • Results showed a significant decrease in GFR after treatment, while SDMA and urine specific gravity (USG) levels remained stable, indicating that SDMA may not provide additional insight into kidney function changes post-treatment unlike traditional markers.

The objective of this case report was to describe successful surgical and post-operative management of a medial patellar luxation in a Vietnamese Potbellied Pig. A two-year old, castrated, Vietnamese Potbellied Pig presented to a veterinary teaching hospital for right pelvic limb lameness of 2 weeks duration. Upon physical examination a grade 3 patellar luxation was diagnosed on the right pelvic limb.

Objective: To characterize lung ultrasonography (LUS) findings in dogs with a primary clinical complaint of cough.

Animals: 100 client-owned coughing dogs.

Procedures: A standardized LUS examination was performed for all dogs to quantify the number of B lines and identify subpleural abnormalities at 4 sites on each hemithorax.

Article Synopsis
  • A 9-year-old mixed breed dog experienced severe health issues, including loss of appetite, vomiting, and coughing, which led to diagnostic tests revealing a large mediastinal mass with fungal organisms.
  • Despite treatment, the dog's condition worsened over 8 months, ultimately resulting in euthanasia; necropsy showed significant internal fungal infections and inflammation.
  • Histology and genetic analysis identified the fungus as Phanerochaete chrysosporium, marking it as the first known case of this specific fungal infection in animals.

Progressive myelomalacia is an uncommon type of ischemic, hemorrhagic spinal cord infarction. Diagnosis can be difficult, but prompt recognition is important. We hypothesized that cerebrospinal fluid signal attenuation on magnetic resonance (MR) images would be more extensive in dogs that developed progressive myelomalacia vs.

Aberrant microchip migration has been reported in domestic animal species, but in most cases, this migration is atraumatic to the patient. Reports of microchip-associated trauma and sarcoma development also have been reported in a variety of mammal species. This report describes accidental arterial microchip insertion causing obstruction of the iliac artery in a Chilean flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis).

An 8-year-old Thoroughbred mare presented for decreased appetite, ataxia, and weakness. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a large volume of anechoic fluid along with multiple masses involving the spleen, liver, and diaphragm. Pleural fluid was identified via ultrasonography and thoracic radiography.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of several sedation protocols on glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in cats as measured by use of quantitative renal scintigraphy and to analyze interobserver differences in GFR calculation.

Animals: 5 cats (1 sexually intact male, 1 neutered male, and 3 sexually intact females).

Procedures: Effects on GFR of 3 sedation protocols commonly used at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine were evaluated.

Influenza A pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus continues to rapidly spread worldwide. In 2009, pandemic (H1N1) 2009 infection in a domestic cat from Iowa was diagnosed by a novel PCR assay that distinguishes between Eurasian and North American pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus matrix genes. Human-to-cat transmission is presumed.

Background: Pancreatitis, hepatobiliary disease, and proximal gastrointestinal tract disorders are clinical situations where delivery of nutrients via jejunostomy tube is preferable to a feeding gastrostomy. A thorough description of the percutaneous endoscopic gastrojejunostomy (PEG-J) technique and practical guidelines for its use in small animals have not been reported.

Hypothesis: That a simple technique of PEG-J tube placement in humans would be useful and safe in healthy dogs and cats.

This study evaluated the prophylactic effectiveness of hyperimmune plasma (HIP) as an aid in the prevention of pneumonia caused by experimental infection with Rhodococcus equi. Thirty neonatal foals were administered R. equi HIP or saline at 2 days of age and were infected with virulent R.

A 4-week old Quarter Horse filly was evaluated for abnormal gait and lateral deviation of the cervical spine. Physical examination findings prompted radiographs and computed tomography of the thoracic vertebral column which revealed hypoplasia of several thoracic vertebral bodies and resultant scoliosis of the thoracic vertebral column and deviation of the left and right hemithoraces and associated ribs. Collectively, radiography and computed tomography provided an accurate description of the vertebral malformations resulting in scoliosis in this foal.
