A world in turmoil: governing risk, establishing order in humanitarian crises.

This special issue of Disasters on humanitarian governance focuses on risk and order. Its contributions show the tensions between humanitarian normative ideals and practical consequences, as many of the ordering effects are associated with either intended or unintended consequences. This introduction offers a conceptual framing of humanitarian governance.

Internally displaced women as knowledge producers and users in humanitarian action: the view from Colombia.

The literature on evidence-based action in humanitarian crises commonly focuses on how inter-and non-governmental organisations can produce better knowledge and how this can be translated into improved programming. Yet, there is little recorded experience of, or concern about, how the beneficiaries of humanitarian relief can produce and use knowledge of their predicament. This paper is based on a case study of how the Liga de Mujeres Desplazadas, an internally displaced women's organisation in northern Colombia, employs proactively research-generated data to advance its own agenda in its interactions with donor bodies and the government.

The incidence of caries and white spot lesions in orthodontically treated adolescents with a comprehensive caries prophylactic regimen--a prospective study.

The aim of the study was to assess the effect of a comprehensive prophylactic regimen in reducing the incidence of white spot lesions (WSL) and caries during orthodontic treatment. Eighty consecutive patients, scheduled for fixed appliance treatment in both jaws were compared with a non-orthodontic matched-control group. The oral hygiene regimen consisted of brushing two to three times daily, flossing, fluoride rinse, and plaque disclosing tablets.
