Pediatric Emergency Physicians' Knowledge, Attitudes, and Behaviors Regarding Confidential Adolescent Care.

Objectives: More than 19 million adolescents seek care in the emergency department (ED) annually. We aimed to describe the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to confidential adolescent care among pediatric ED physicians.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire of US physician members of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Collaborative Research Committee survey listserv.

Increasing testing for high-risk adolescents a pediatric emergency department.

Background: Trichomonas is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) among adolescents, causing vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, and dysuria. Affected individuals have increased susceptibility to other STIs and may have pregnancy complications. A quality improvement project was developed to increase trichomonas testing among high-risk adolescent patients from 40% in July 2014 to 100% by December 31, 2014, and sustain over 6 months.

Quality Improvement-Driven Reduction in Countywide Medicaid Acute Asthma Health Care Utilization.

Objective: This study evaluates the impact of a coordinated effort by an urban pediatric hospital and its associated accountable care organization to reduce asthma-related emergency department (ED) and inpatient utilization by a large, countywide Medicaid patient population.

Methods: Multiple evidence-based interventions targeting general pediatric asthma care and high health care utilizers were implemented using standardized quality improvement methodologies. Annual asthma ED and inpatient utilization rates by 2- to 18-year-old members of an accountable care organization living in the surrounding county (>140,000 eligible members in 2016), adjusted per 1000 children from 2008 through 2016, were analyzed using Poisson regression.

Emergency Department Directors Are Willing to Expand Reproductive Health Services for Adolescents.

Study Objective: Nearly 20 million adolescents receive emergency department (ED) care each year, many of whom have untreated reproductive health issues. ED visits represent an opportunity to provide appropriate care, however, ED physician reproductive health care practices and capabilities in the United States have not been described. We sought to characterize pediatric ED director's individual practice and ED system resources for providing adolescent reproductive health care.

Ventricular tachycardia after ketamine sedation for fracture reduction.

This case report describes a 10-year-old female patient who underwent ketamine sedation for fracture reduction and experienced asymptomatic ventricular tachycardia after the sedation. She had no history of syncope, chest pain, palpations, or light-headedness and had a normal physical examination. This is the first reported case of a patient experiencing ventricular tachycardia after ketamine use for sedation.
