Isolated superior mesenteric dissection (ISMAD) is an uncommon condition, often diagnosed incidentally for presentations of acute abdominal pain. Early identification and treatment are crucial as complications such as bowel ischemia or vessel rupture can occur. There remain no established treatment guidelines, making surgical and endovascular indications controversial.

Traditional youth baseball academies in the Dominican Republic, along with the potential of a major league baseball contract, are viewed by many parents as the best option to pull a child and family out of poverty. These academies advance the child's athletic abilities yet fail to provide formal education. Unfortunately, 97% of athletes leave the academy without a contract and are left with little education, job skills, or stable job prospects which ultimately returns them to the life of poverty they had hoped to escape through baseball.

These visual analytic methods are beginning to be instantiated within mixed-initiative systems, where humans and machines collaboratively influence evidence-gathering and decision-making. But an open research question is that, when domain experts analyze their data, can they completely trust the outputs and operations on the machine-side? Visualization potentially leads to a transparent analysis process, but do domain experts always trust what they see? To address these questions, we present results from the design and evaluation of a mixed-initiative, visual analytics system for biologists, focusing on analyzing the relationships between familiarity of an analysis medium and domain experts' trust.

Case Report: We describe the case of a 56-year-old male with a 4-year history of a complex abdominal wall seroma. He had undergone fluid aspiration twice without success.
Background: Severe injury results in increased mobilization of hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC) from the bone marrow (BM) to sites of injury, which may contribute to persistent BM dysfunction after trauma. Norepinephrine is a known inducer of HPC mobilization, and nonselective β-blockade with propranolol has been shown to decrease mobilization after trauma and hemorrhagic shock (HS). This study will determine the role of selective β-adrenergic receptor blockade in HPC mobilization in a combined model of lung contusion (LC) and HS.

Previously, propranolol (BB) use after injury and shock has been shown to prevent this BM dysfunction and improve hemoglobin levels. This study seeks to further investigate the optimal therapeutic dose and timing of BB administration following injury and shock.

Granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a potent stimulator of HPC mobilization. We hypothesized that plasma G-CSF levels are elevated after trauma and correlate with postinjury anemia and infection.

Because selective beta-1 blockers are used commonly for their cardiac protection, the aim of this study was to more clearly define the role of specific beta adrenergic receptors in BM protection after trauma and HS.
Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent unilateral lung contusion (LC) followed by HS for 45 minutes.
