Recent research using the Posner cuing paradigm to explore inhibition of return seems to suggest that repetition of a nonspatial feature modulates cue-related facilitatory and inhibitory aftereffects differently in detection and discrimination tasks. Because the cues were unrelated to the final response in the detection task but parallel to (not orthogonal with) the final response in the discrimination task, it is unclear whether the different patterns of results were caused by the complexity of the decision (detection vs. discrimination) or by the task relevance of the feature that might or might not repeat from cue to target.

In a study of scientific nomenclature, we explore the diversity of perspectives researchers endorse for the phenomenon of inhibition of return (IOR). IOR is often described as an effect whereby people are slower to respond to a target presented at a recently stimulated or inspected location as compared to a target presented at a new location. Since its discovery, scores of papers have been published on IOR, and researchers have proposed, accepted and rejected a variety of potential causes, mechanisms, effects and components for the phenomenon.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFVisuospatial neglect after stroke is often characterized by a disengage deficit on a cued orienting task, in which individuals are disproportionately slower to respond to targets presented on the contralesional side of space following an ispilesional cue as compared to the reverse. The purpose of this study was to investigate the generality of the finding of a disengage deficit on another measure of cued attention, the temporal order judgment (TOJ) task, that does not depend upon speeded manual responses. Individuals with right hemisphere stroke with and without spatial neglect and older healthy controls (OHC) were tested with both a speeded RT cueing task and an unspeeded TOJ-with-cuing task.

Inhibition of return (IOR) is an effect on spatial attention whereby reaction times to a target presented at a location where a stimulus had recently been presented are increased, as opposed to when a target is presented at a new location. Despite early reports that habituation is not responsible for the IOR effect, the human cognitive literature provides indirect evidence in favor of the possibility. In addition, recent neurophysiological studies provide direct support for the idea that habituation is at least a contributing source for the IOR effect.

Typically, visual search requires the participant to indicate the presence or absence of a prespecified target. Although the slope ratio for present versus absent trials is no longer considered to be indicative of whether search is serial or not, target detection remains a staple amongst studies examining theoretical and empirical aspects of attention.

We explored the generality of this effect by using paintings in which the gaze direction of a key character had been carefully manipulated. Our observers looked at these paintings in one of three instructional states (neutral, social, or spatial) while we monitored their eye movements.

We explored whether the IOR effect would increase with the number of cues preceding the target (a 'cue'). Subjects performed a Posner cueing task with 1-5 cue presentations prior to the target, to which they made either a manual localization (Experiment 1) or target discrimination response (Experiment 2).
