Tamoxifen and bone metabolism in postmenopausal low-risk breast cancer patients: a randomized study.

Purpose: This trial was undertaken to evaluate the effect of adjuvant tamoxifen on bone metabolism in postmenopausal women undergoing surgery for low-risk breast cancer.

Patients And Methods: In an open trial, 25 women were randomized to receive tamoxifen 30 mg/d for 2 years, and 25 women constituted the control group. Twenty women treated with tamoxifen and 23 women in the control group provided data for the analysis.

Cardiac function in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection and with no other active infections.

Objective: to investigate cardiac function and prognostic significance of echocardiographic findings in patients with uncomplicated human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infection.

Patients And Methods: Doppler echocardiography was performed in 60 male patients with HIV-infection and no signs of other active infections, and in 36 age and sex matched normal control subjects. The survival time of the patients was assessed 36 months after the echocardiographic examination.

Sudden death caused by thrombosed coronary artery aneurysm. Two unusual cases of Kawasaki disease.

Kawasaki disease primarily affects children below 5 years of age, and fatal coronary complications usually occur within 6-12 months following the acute illness. We report 2 unusual fatal cases of thrombosed coronary artery aneurysms. The first case was an 11-year-old boy, who died suddenly 2 months after the acute illness.

[Transesophageal echocardiography for registration of hemodynamics. A new tool in anesthesiology].

During the last ten years, transesophageal echocardiography has become an important tool for cardiac monitoring. In other countries it is widely applied, especially in cardiac surgery, but the areas of application are still expanding. Transesophageal echocardiography is a non-invasive technique in contrast to most other methods available for monitoring central haemodynamics.

[Spinal analgesia for cesarean section].

Over a twelve-month period, 47 of a total of 127 women had spinal anaesthesia (SA) for caesarean section (SC). Data from the anaesthesia and the postoperative period were collected and a questionnaire was sent to the mothers after discharge. The analgesia was sufficient in 45 patients.

Characterization of 24 porcine (dA-dC)n-(dT-dG)n microsatellites: genotyping of unrelated animals from four breeds and linkage studies.

Twenty-four PCR primer pairs were designed for the detection of porcine microsatellites. Polymorphism was investigated in 76 unrelated animals from four different breeds: Duroc, Landrace, Hampshire, and Yorkshire. Compared with human microsatellites, a general lower heterozygosity was detected; however, for each microsatellite a significant variation between breeds in number of alleles and heterozygosity was seen.

Decreased efficacy of cyclophosphamide, epirubicin and 5-fluorouracil in metastatic breast cancer when reducing treatment duration from 18 to 6 months.

The impact of treatment duration on survival and progression-free survival is uncertain in metastatic breast cancer. In this trial 359 patients were randomised to receive cyclophosphamide, epirubicin and 5-fluorouracil (CEF) once every 3 weeks for a maximum of 18 months or identical chemotherapy for a maximum of 6 months. Following progressive disease (PD) or severe toxicity CEF was discontinued before the scheduled maximum duration.

CSF hydrodynamics in superior sagittal sinus thrombosis.

Cerebrospinal fluid hydrodynamics were investigated with a constant pressure infusion method in patients with superior sagittal sinus thrombosis. Ten patients were studied with serial examinations up to 15 years after the onset of the disease. A total of 70 CSF hydrodynamic examinations were performed.

CSF hydrodynamics in idiopathic intracranial hypertension: a long-term study.

To examine CSF hydrodynamics, we studied 16 patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension and 45 control subjects with a constant-pressure infusion method. Fifteen patients had 155 examinations up to 15 years after the onset of disease. In most patients, the disturbances of CSF hydrodynamics persisted for many years.

[Septic sacroiliitis].

Septic sacroiliitis (SSI) is a rare form of pyogenic arthritis, which unrecognized or inadequately treated may cause longterm morbidity and eventually lasting disability. SSI is most frequently diagnosed among young adults, especially in drug abusers. Based on a literature survey three cases of SSI are presented, each representing characteristic aspects of SSI.

Lethal myocardial infarction subsequent to compression of the left anterior descending coronary artery induced by traumatic hematoma.

Post-traumatic myocardial infarction is a well-known although rare complication of blunt chest traumas. In cases of proximally located damage to the coronary arteries, modern vascular surgery such as bypass operations may be lifesaving. In this paper we describe a case, where a healthy 35-year-old man developed a lethal myocardial infarction 8 days after a chest trauma caused by a moped.

Prognostic indicators of metastatic bone disease in human breast cancer.

The time to detection of metastatic bone disease (MBD) by radiographic examination was studied in 221 patients with advanced breast cancer. None of the patients had bone metastases by radiography or bone marrow carcinosis, evaluated by bilateral iliac crest biopsy. The period of follow-up after first recurrence was 46 months.

One-dimensional isoelectric focusing followed by immunoblotting and development of the immunoblots with the monoclonal antibody HC-10, raised against denatured HLA class I heavy chains, was used to demonstrate biochemical variation in cattle MHC (BoLA) class I molecules. The bands obtained correlated well with BoLA-A specificities. Two or three bands were identified for the specificities w7, w8, w16, w18, w21, cph43 and cph49, whereas no bands were observed for the specificity w2.

Topical salicylic acid interferes with UVB therapy for psoriasis.

Salicylic acid has been widely used in the topical treatment of psoriasis. Chemically it is closely related to paraaminobenzoic acid. Following in vitro studies indicating that salicylic acid might exhibit relevant UVB absorption, we found that salicylic acid had a clinically pronounced filter effect when applied prior to UVB exposure.
