Domestic sheep can carry the bacterium in their upper respiratory tract, often with little effect on health and productivity. However, for bighorn sheep populations, there is a link between infection and pneumonia, poor lamb recruitment, and high fatality rate. Because of these outcomes, preventing transmission of to free-ranging wild sheep has garnered interest from both the livestock and wildlife sectors.

Improving Widescale Monitoring of Ectoparasite Presence in Northern Canadian Wildlife with the Aid of Citizen Science.

Sampling hides from harvested animals is commonly used for passive monitoring of ectoparasites on wildlife hosts, but often relies heavily on community engagement to obtain spatially and temporally consistent samples. Surveillance of winter ticks () on moose () and caribou () hosts in Yukon, Canada, has relied in part on voluntary submission of hides by hunters since 2011, but few samples were submitted. To enhance sampling efforts on underrepresented moose and caribou hosts, we implemented a three-year citizen science program, the Yukon Winter Tick Monitoring Project (YWTMP), to better engage with hunters in hide sample collection.

Porcupine quill injuries in dogs: a retrospective of 296 cases (1998-2002).

The purpose of this retrospective study was to identify factors associated with quill injury in dogs. A second objective was to determine the risk of complications and any factors that would predict the likelihood of complications. Hospital records of 296 porcupine quill injuries in dogs from 1998 to 2002 were studied.
