The movement of cationic transition metals through the subsurface is strongly retarded by sorption to the porous media. However, dissolved organic ligands can compete with soil surfaces by providing binding sites for metals in solution. An extracellular polymer produced by a bacterium isolated from soil was used in this study to observe and model the influence of a naturally occurring ligand on the release of adsorbed metals from two test soils.
