Background: For treatment of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour (GIST) located in unreachable areas, such as the esophagogastric junction or pyloric ring, laparoscopic resection cannot be easily applied. We used single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) for intragastric resection of GISTs.

Patients And Methods: We report on our cases (n=3) of GIST of the stomach treated with the SILS port placed intragastrically through the anterior wall of the stomach.

Background: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. Surgical treatment is the only chance of cure for patients with a primary localized GIST. A laparoscopic approach has been considered reasonable for these tumors of gastric origin.

Article Synopsis
  • Access procedures for feeding can be done endoscopically or surgically, and single-incision laparoscopic surgery offers a minimally invasive alternative when endoscopic options are not viable.
  • A case study details the successful use of this technique in a 10-year-old girl with complex health issues, including cystic fibrosis, who also required umbilical hernia repair during the same procedure.
  • The surgery was efficient, taking only 25 minutes, with a smooth recovery, highlighting advantages such as less pain, quicker recovery, and improved cosmetic outcomes for patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the characteristics of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) with significant cystic changes, focusing on both clinical and molecular aspects.
  • A 68-year-old man was found to have a large cystic abdominal mass, which was surgically removed and identified as a GIST with high-risk features, including specific immunohistochemical markers.
  • The diagnosis was further confirmed through genetic testing, revealing a mutation linked to the tumor, yet the patient remained cancer-free over a 97-month follow-up period.

Introduction: Ischemic bowel disease comprises both mesenteric ischemia and colonic ischemia. Mesenteric ischemia can be divided into acute and chronic ischemia. These are two separate entities, each with their specific clinical presentation and diagnostic and therapeutic modalities.

Background: Although the resection of solitary visceral melanoma metastases is indicated when possible, further progression of metastatic disease is seen in the vast majority of patients. New modalities of immunotherapy can offer durable disease control in a significant proportion of melanoma patients.

Case Report: A 28-year-old man was diagnosed with stage III melanoma in 2003 and was treated with autologous dendritic cells in the adjuvant setting.

Article Synopsis
  • The article examines the laparoscopic repair of Morgagni hernias in three pediatric patients.
  • The surgery involved closing the hernia defect with nonabsorbable sutures placed outside the body.
  • All patients recovered well with no complications or reoccurrences, and their chest X-rays remained normal in follow-up.

Background: Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) is a safe and effective treatment for morbid obesity. The aim of the present study was to identify factors actually contributing to the feasibility or to the failure of performing this procedure in an outpatient setting.

Methods: In this prospective study, 100 ambulatory LAGB procedures were compared with 100 procedures performed in patients with an overnight stay.

Background: Extraintestinal Enterobius vermicularis infections are rare but may occasionally affect the female genital tract. Although mostly asymptomatic or causing minor clinical problems, they may lead to severe infectious complications.

Methods: Case report and review of the pertinent English language literature.

Background: This study aimed to assess the feasibility, safety, and immediate postoperative outcome of laparoscopically assisted ileocolic resection for Crohn's disease.

Methods: Data were collected retrospectively from a database of 50 consecutive patients with Crohn's disease who underwent ileocolic resection between 1997 and 2007. The mean age of the patients was 40 years (range, 20-74 years), and 21 of the patients were men.

The diagnosis and surgical management of insulinomas associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) pose additional problems in children because of the long-term risk of recurrence of other pancreatic and non-pancreatic tumors. We report a diagnostic confirmation by laparoscopic ultrasound of an insulinoma and its successful removal by laparoscopic enucleation in an 8- year-old boy who was admitted to our hospital with a history of recurrent episodes of absences, headache, and visual and auditive disturbances diagnosed as hyperinsulinism-related hypoglycemia. Magnetic resonance imaging of the pancreas showed a small contrast-enhancing lesion in the body of the pancreas, suspected for insulinoma.

Ectopic pancreas is pancreatic tissue found outside the usual anatomic location of the pancreas. It is often an incidental finding in clinical practice and can be found at different sites in the gastrointestinal tract. Although usually a silent anomaly, it may become clinically evident when complicated by pathologic changes such as inflammation, bleeding, obstruction, and malignant transformation.

Article Synopsis
  • A large diaphragmatic Morgagni-type hernia was found in an 8-month-old girl during a routine check.
  • The hernia was repaired using a laparoscopic technique, which is less invasive than traditional surgery.
  • Laparoscopic surgery is recommended as a better option for similar cases due to its advantages.
