Background: Data on outcomes after surgery for sigmoid volvulus is limited. The aim of this study was to develop a model to predict need for emergent surgery and mortality after resection for sigmoid volvulus.

Methods: The NSQIP database was queried from 2012 to 2016 to identify patients undergoing segmental resection for sigmoid volvulus.

Background: A paucity of data exists in the use of neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy (NRT) for T4, non-metastatic colon cancer. This study was conducted to determine the effect of NRT on outcomes after resection for T4 colon cancer.

Methods: All patients with non-metastatic resected clinical T4 colon cancer from 2000 to 2012 at a tertiary care center were included.

When created properly, an ileostomy or colostomy can dramatically improve a patient's quality of life. Conversely, when a patient develops complications related to their stoma, the impact on physical and mental health can be profound. Unfortunately, significant morbidity is associated with stoma creation conveying high rates of both early and late-term complications.

Purpose: Anorectal gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are exceedingly rare, and management remains controversial in regard to local resection (LR) and preoperative chemotherapy.

Methods: The National Cancer Data Base was queried from 1998 to 2012 for cases of GIST resection in the rectum or anus. Patient demographics, type of surgery (LR vs.

Background: Anastomotic leak is one of the most feared complications of gastrointestinal surgery. Surgeons routinely perform a diverting loop ileostomy (DLI) to protect high-risk colo-rectal anastomoses.

Study Design: The NSQIP database was queried from 2012 to 2013 for patients undergoing open ileo-colic resection with and without a DLI.

Background: Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a rare malignancy with a poor prognosis. Human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (Her-2/neu) is overexpressed in SDC and, hence, HER-2/neu targeted therapy could be an option.

Methods: A 72-year-old man presented with parotid swelling and cervical lymphadenopathy.

Background And Study Aim: Endoscopic therapy of brisk upper gastrointestinal bleeding remains challenging. A proprietary nanopowder (TC-325) has been proven to be effective in high pressure bleeding from external wounds. The efficacy and safety of TC-325 were assessed in a survival gastrointestinal bleeding animal model.

Background And Aims: The preoperative diagnosis of autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) is difficult, given its similar clinical presentation to pancreatic cancer. The aims of the study are to describe our center's experience with AIP and apply the Japanese AIP diagnostic criteria to a cohort of patients with histologically-proven AIP in order to assess their performance characteristics.

Methods: A prospective pathology database was queried for AIP patients who were evaluated and/or treated at Johns Hopkins Hospital from 2002 to 2009.

Introduction: Lasers 2-microm in wavelength offer efficient tissue cutting with limited thermal damage in biological tissue.

Objective: To evaluate the dissection capabilities of a 2-microm continuous-wave laser for NOTES procedures.

Methods And Procedures: We conducted 18 acute animal experiments.

Background: Closure of the transgastric access to the peritoneal cavity is a critical step in natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES).

Objective: To perform a direct comparison of the histological healing post clips and threaded tags (T-tags) closure after transgastric NOTES procedures.

Design And Intervention: Twelve survival porcine experiments.

Background And Study Aims: Minimizing the invasiveness of operations by using natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) may reduce adhesion formation. The aim of the study was to compare rates of adhesion formation after peritoneoscopy with liver biopsy by laparotomy, laparoscopy, and transgastric NOTES.

Materials And Methods: Experimental comparative survival study, at a university hospital.

Pancreatic enzyme supplements (PES) are used in chronic pancreatitis (CP) for correction of pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI) as well as pain and malnutrition. The use of porcine pancreatic enzymes for the correction of exocrine insufficiency is governed by the pathophysiology of the disease as well as pharmacologic properties of PES. Variability in bioequivalence of PES has been noted on in vitro and in vivo testing and has been attributed to the differences in enteric coating and the degree of micro-encapsulation.

Background: Despite advances in the development of fetal surgery, morbidity and mortality are substantial. A natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES)-guided approach to the gravid uterus may offer a less-invasive technique.

Objective: To assess the feasibility of NOTES for diagnostic and therapeutic intrauterine fetal interventions.

Context: Hospital admissions for pancreatitis are increasing. Factors involved in inpatient mortality have not been previously assessed on a large-scale basis.

Objective: The aim was to study factors associated with pancreatitis-related death in hospitalized patients.

Background: Leak-resistant closure of transluminal access is a major challenge facing natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES).

Objective: To evaluate a hydrogen (H(2))-based leak test for assessment of transluminal-access closure integrity after NOTES procedures.

Setting: Nine acute porcine experiments.
