Article Synopsis
  • A 53-year-old woman suffered severe hand injuries from a wood planer accident, resulting in significant tissue loss and amputations of several fingers.
  • The surgical intervention involved using parts from her middle finger to reconstruct the injured index finger and to create a new thumb joint, along with a flap for wound coverage.
  • After initial recovery, she experienced instability that required additional surgery, but six years later, she achieved good hand function and aesthetics, indicating that using non-vascularized joint transfers can be effective when vascular options aren't possible.

Rib fractures are one of the most common injuries following blunt trauma. When associated with penetrating trauma, the projectile velocity and immense energy transfer cause significant rib fracture displacement and fragmentation. As a result, these patients are potentially exposed to an even higher risk of complications compared to those seen in more simple rib fractures.

Craniofacial trauma involving the anterior skull base produces a heterogenous injury with variance in fracture pattern, complexity and outcome. Variance is influenced by the biomechanical properties of the craniofacial construct and by the magnitude and vector of the impacting energy. Fractal dimension and other metrics applied to individual fracture patterns allows quantification of fracture complexity and severity, which can be used to correlate with neurological outcome.
