Dissolved organic matter (DOM) present in surface aquatic systems is a heterogeneous mixture of organic compounds reflecting its allochthonous and autochthonous organic matter (OM) sources. The composition of DOM is determined by environmental factors like land use, water chemistry, and climate, which influence its release, movement, and turnover in the ecosystem. However, studying the impact of these environmental factors on DOM composition is challenging due to the dynamic nature of the system and the complex interactions of multiple environmental factors involved.

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement Framework for Improving Joy at Work includes self-care as a strategy to support happy, healthy, and productive people; however, this relationship has not previously been empirically demonstrated. The purpose of this study was to describe self-care practices and levels of meaning and joy in work (MJW) in a sample of registered nurses and to explore the relationship between self-care and MJW. Registered nurses (n = 122) from a regional health system completed a survey during a nursing recognition event.

The oomycete Aphanomyces astaci is the causative agent of crayfish plague, a disease threatening susceptible freshwater crayfish species in Europe. To detect its spatiotemporal occurrence in Switzerland, we reviewed (1) the literature regarding occurrence of crayfish plague and North American crayfish carrier species and (2) the necropsy report archive of the Institute for Fish and Wildlife Health (FIWI) from 1968 to 2020. In the past, crayfish plague was diagnosed through several methods: conventional PCR, culture, and histology.

The introduction of invasive crayfish has led to a decline of many European native species of crayfish across their range. In this study, novel duplex assays for all crayfish occurring in Switzerland were developed. We aimed to identify the distribution of the seven species using a traditional trap surveillance method as well by collecting water samples to detect eDNA by species-specific quantitative real-time PCR.

The hepatic bile acid transporter Na/taurocholate co-transporting polypeptide (NTCP) was identified in 2012 as the high-affinity hepatic receptor for the hepatitis B and D viruses (HBV/HDV). Since then, this carrier has emerged as promising drug target for HBV/HDV virus entry inhibitors, but the synthetic peptide Hepcludex of high molecular weight is the only approved HDV entry inhibitor so far. The present study aimed to identify small molecules as novel NTCP inhibitors with anti-viral activity.

Developing resistance mechanisms of pathogens against established and frequently used drugs are a growing global health problem. Besides the development of novel drug candidates per se, new approaches to counteract resistance mechanisms are needed. Drug candidates that not only target the pathogens directly but also modify the host immune system might boost anti-parasitic defence and facilitate clearance of pathogens.

Parasite-mediated diseases like malaria and schistosomiasis are growing health problems worldwide and novel drug candidates are urgently needed. In this study, the in-vitro safety profile of steroid compound 1o (sc1o), effective against the parasites Plasmodium falciparum and Schistosoma mansoni with an IC value of 5 nM, was characterized. We assessed viability/proliferation, apoptosis and cell cycle tests to determine the cytotoxic profile of sc1o in cancer cells.

Background: The associated increase in the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels and uremic toxins in chronic kidney disease (CKD) has shifted the way we focus on intestinal microbiota. This study shows that a disruption of the intestinal barrier in CKD promotes leakage of LPS from the gut, subsequently decreasing insulin sensitivity. Butyrate treatment improved the intestinal barrier function by increasing colonic mucin and tight junction (TJ) proteins.

Nitrate loads and corresponding dual-isotope signatures were used to evaluate large scale N dynamics and trends in a river catchment with a strong anthropogenic gradient (forest conservation areas in mountain regions, and intensive agriculturally used lowlands). The Bode River catchment with an area of 3200 km(2) in the Harz Mountains and central German lowlands was investigated by a two years monitoring program including 133 water sampling points each representing a subcatchment. Based on discharge data either observed or simulated by the mesoscale hydrological model (mHM) a load based interpretation of hydrochemical and isotope data was conducted.

A high fat meal, frequently known as western diet (WD), exacerbates atherosclerosis and diabetes. Both these diseases are frequently associated with renal failure. Recent studies have shown that lipopolysaccharide (LPS) leaks into the circulation from the intestine in the setting of renal failure and after WD.

Interactions between hydrological characteristics and microbial activities affect the isotopic composition of dissolved nitrate in surface water. Nitrogen and oxygen isotopic signatures of riverine nitrate in 133 sampling locations distributed over the Bode River catchment in the Harz Mountains, Germany, were used to identify nitrate sources and transformation processes. An annual monitoring programme consisting of seasonal sampling campaigns in spring, summer and autumn was conducted.

Previously, we showed that curcumin prevents chronic kidney disease (CKD) development in ⅚ nephrectomized (Nx) rats when given within 1 wk after Nx (Ghosh SS, Massey HD, Krieg R, Fazelbhoy ZA, Ghosh S, Sica DA, Fakhry I, Gehr TW. Am J Physiol Renal Physiol 296: F1146-F1157, 2009). To better mimic the scenario for renal disease in humans, we began curcumin and enalapril therapy when proteinuria was already established.

Background: Nitric oxide (NO) deficiency contributes to chronic kidney disease progression. NO deficiency could occur for many reasons, one of which is decreased NO synthase (NOS) abundance and/or activity.

Methods: In these experiments, we studied two groups of male Sprague Dawley rats given sham or surgical excision of both poles of the left kidney (at 2 days of age) followed by sham or surgical removal of the right kidney at 10 days.

Objective: To determine whether extending the interval between chemoradiation (CRT) and surgery, and administering additional chemotherapy during the waiting period has an impact on tumor response, CRT-related toxicity and surgical complications in patients with advanced rectal cancer.

Background: Locally advanced rectal cancer is usually treated with preoperative CRT followed by surgery approximately 6 weeks later. The Timing of Rectal Cancer Response to Chemoradiation Consortium designed a prospective, multicenter, Phase II clinical trial to investigate extending the interval between CRT and surgery, and administering additional chemotherapy during the waiting period.

Homo-dimers of styryl dyes were chemically tailored in order to become specific cytochemical probes for use in the life sciences. Histochemical applications using fixed cryotome sections are discussed. It is concluded, that homo-dimerization of specific styryl substrates of peroxidase (PO) by way of their covalent linkage, does not necessarily lead to improved detection sensitivity of endogenous and immuno-bound peroxidase (PO) activity.

Purpose: Mammography is a widely used tool for the screening of breast cancer, and calcifications are a common finding in most mammograms. The location, size, number, morphology, and distribution of calcifications are an important information to differentiate a benign lesion from probably malignant pathologies. Calcifications are not detectable with a standard dynamic contrast enhanced breast MRI.

Cervical squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is among the most common malignancies in women worldwide. In developed countries routine cytology screening has dramatically reduced SCC mortality within the last three decades. High risk (HR) human papilloma virus (HPV) infection is the main causal factor in nearly 100% of invasive SCCs, in most cases of low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) and in nearly all cases of high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL).

Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is a distinctive lymphoma subtype characterized by rareness of tumor cells [Hodgkin's and Reed-Sternberg (HRS) cells in classical HL and lymphocytic and histiocytic cells in lymphocyte predominant HL] as well as the vast majority of the surrounding inflammatory-like cellular infiltrate. Still the onset of this highly variable disease is not completely understood. Proteome analysis can lead to the identification of potential proteins capable of elucidating malignant growth and survival in HL.
