Background: Circulating tumour cells (CTCs) and tumour-derived extracellular vesicles (tdEVs) have great potential for monitoring therapy response and early detection of tumour relapse, facilitating personalized adjuvant therapeutic strategies. However, their low abundance in peripheral blood limits their informative value. In this study, we explored the presence of CTCs and tdEVs collected intraoperatively from a tumour-draining vein (DV) and via a central venous catheter (CVC) prior to tumour resection.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study involving patients with pancreatic cancer and T2D found that higher levels of HbA1c (6.5-8.4% and ≥8.5%) were significantly associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
  • * Among diabetes treatments, only the SGLT-2 inhibitor showed a negative association with pancreatic cancer risk, suggesting it may help reduce this risk in T2D patients.

Alterations in the serum lipid profile have been suspected in many psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and depression. However, studies on lipid status in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are sparse and inconsistent. Using the nationwide, population-based IQVIA Disease Analyzer database, this retrospective cohort study included 5367 outpatients from general practices in Germany aged ≥18 years with a documented first diagnosis of ADHD between January 2005 and December 2021 and 26,835 propensity score-matched individuals without ADHD.

Primary bone tumors are rare but more frequently seen during childhood and with predilection for the distal femur and proximal tibia. Therapy of benign tumors-if indicated-includes surgical resection in most cases, whereas malignant bone tumors such as osteo- and Ewing's sarcomas are treated with chemotherapy, wide resection and/or radiation therapy (Ewing's sarcoma). The reconstruction of emerging bone defects is significantly influenced by surgeon-related preferences and tumor-associated factors, respectively.

The dreaded nosocomial pathogen Clostridioides difficile causes diarrhea and severe inflammation of the colon, especially after the use of certain antibiotics. The bacterium releases two deleterious toxins, TcdA and TcdB, into the gut, which are mainly responsible for the symptoms of C. difficile-associated diseases (CDADs).

Purpose: Appendicitis, characterized by inflammation of the vermiform appendix, is a common abdominal emergency necessitating appendectomy. Recent evidence suggests a potential link between appendicitis and subsequent diverticular disease, yet population-based studies investigating this association are limited.

Methods: Utilizing the Disease Analyzer database encompassing data from over 1000 primary care practices in Germany, we conducted a retrospective cohort study.

Background: The gut microbiome modulates the liver immune microenvironment and is deeply integrated into the pathophysiology of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Appendectomies, which are performed in almost all patients diagnosed with appendicitis, cause long-term alterations to the gut microbiome, providing a potential link with the development of MASLD. We therefore investigated a potential link between appendicitis and the presence of MASLD in a large cohort of outpatients in Germany.
