Background: Few data are available on the interplay of antenatal and early inhaled postnatal corticosteroids. The NEuroSIS trial randomized extremely preterm infants to receive either early inhaled budesonide or placebo and analyzed the effect of study medication on bronchopulmonary dysplasia or death, as well as the effect on neurodevelopmental outcome at 18-22 months corrected age. Application of antenatal steroids may have had an influence on these outcomes.

Purpose: To assess the clinical utility of the 3D 4K exoscope for reconstructive head and neck surgery.

Methods: This retrospective study analyzed surgical details and complications with the use of the 3D 4K exoscope for microvascular reconstruction at a high-volume Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, compared to the use of a 2D microscope. Patients with oral cancer undergoing microvascular reconstruction were categorized into two cohorts based on the intraoperative use of the 3D 4K exoscope (Orbeye™, Olympus, Tokyo, Japan) or a conventional microscope (ZEISS S8 - OPMI Vario, Carl Zeiss AG, Oberkochen, Germany; Leica M680, Leica Mikrosysteme Vertrieb GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany) during a six-month study period, respectively.

The reconstruction of complex skin defects challenges clinical practice, with autologous skin grafts (ASGs) as the traditional choice due to their high graft take rate and patient compatibility. However, ASGs have limitations such as donor site morbidity, limited tissue availability, and the necessity for multiple surgeries in severe cases. Bioengineered skin grafts (BSGs) aim to address these drawbacks through advanced tissue engineering and biomaterial science.

Background And Purpose: With standard radiotherapy protocols after R0 resection of advanced local oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and primary reconstruction of segmental defects, a high radiation dose is applied to healthy tissue in autologous microvascular free flaps. Considering the potential consequences of flap complications and associated surgeries for patients, data is lacking on whether postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) of the flap volume is indicated at all.

Materials And Methods: Patients with segmental mandibular resection and immediate reconstruction with osseous free flaps due to advanced OSCC between 2012 and 2022 were analyzed retrospectively regarding overall (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), local failure-free survival (LFFS), the need for secondary surgeries as well as flap complications and compared between patients with and without PORT in a matched-pair approach with occurrence of flap complications as a primary endpoint.

Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is increasingly incorporated in European national guidelines for the management of the clinically node-negative neck (cN0) in early-stage oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). In Germany, SLNB in OSCCs is not yet routinely performed. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcome of SLNB in a German cohort.

Objective: Cervical lymph node metastasis (CLNM) is one of the most relevant influencing factors for the oncological outcome of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Several studies showed that the tumors depth of invasion (DOI) influences the risk for CLNM, however varying across the oral subsites. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of DOI and other risk factors in OSCC of the tongue in relation to the occurrence of occult CLNM.

Article Synopsis
  • - Selective neck dissection (SND) is often preferred for patients with oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) who have clinically node-negative necks, while both SND and comprehensive neck dissection (CND) are used for those with clinically node-positive necks (cN+).
  • - A study analyzed 74 OSCC patients with positive neck nodes from 2010-2019, finding no significant differences in overall and disease-free survival between those undergoing CND and SND.
  • - The study identified extracapsular spread (ECS) and male sex as independent risk factors for poorer survival outcomes, indicating that both CND and SND could be effective for patients with positive lymph nodes

Objective: In advanced oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), adjuvant therapy (AT) is an important part of the treatment to ensure extended locoregional control after primary surgical resection. The impact of the time interval between surgery and AT on the oncological prognosis remains unclear, particularly in high-risk constellations. The aim of this study is to categorize treatment delays and to determine their impact on the oncological prognosis within the context of the histopathological risk parameters of patients with advanced OSCC.

Background: Various conservative and surgical approaches exist to treat Robin sequence (RS), but their effects on facial profile and mandibular catch-up growth are unclear. A functional treatment concept, used in our centre for 25 years, includes an individualized palatal plate with a velo-pharyngeal extension and intensive feeding training.

Methods: We performed a prospective study to objectively describe facial profiles in infants with RS treated with the above concept.

Purpose: Intraoperative frozen section analysis (IFSA) is a well-established procedure for determining the intraoperative soft tissue resection status in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Margin status is a major predictor of the patient´s outcome, histologically free margins of ≥ 5 mm are demanded. This study evaluates the accuracy of IFSA, the impact of margin status and the impact of intraoperative margin revision on disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS).

Purpose: Compromised swallowing, speaking, and local complications are the major disadvantages of established approaches to the posterior tongue and oropharynx. The mandibular split involves an esthetically unpleasant bipartition of the lower lip and is prone to bony non-union or sequestration. The conventional pull-through technique on the other hand lacks the secure reattachment of the lingually released soft tissues.

Individual differences in reactivity to unpredictable threat (U-threat) have repeatedly been linked to symptoms of anxiety and drinking behavior. An emerging theory is that individuals who are hyper-reactive to U-threat experience chronic anticipatory anxiety, hyperarousal, and are vulnerable to excessive alcohol use via negative reinforcement processes. Notably, anxiety and alcohol use commonly relate to disruptions in sleep behavior and recent findings suggest that sleep quality may impact the link between reactivity to U-threat and psychiatric symptoms and behaviors.

Titanium patient-specific (CAD/CAM) plates are frequently used in mandibular reconstruction. However, titanium is a very stiff, non-degradable material which also induces artifacts in the imaging. Although magnesium has been proposed as a potential material alternative, the biomechanical conditions in the reconstructed mandible under magnesium CAD/CAM plate fixation are unknown.
