Clinical characteristics of patients with granulomatosis with polyangiitis and microscopic polyangiitis in ENT practice: a comparative analysis.

ENT manifestations are commonly observed in patients with small vessel vasculitis (SVV). The main aim of this study was to analyse and present the clinicopathological characteristics of individuals with SVV emphasising otorhinolaryngological symptoms. This study evaluated 64 patients, 41 with granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) and 23 with microscopic polyangiitis (MPA).

The anatomical relation of the extracranial internal carotid artery in the parapharyngeal space.

Background: The proximity of the internal carotid artery to the pharyngeal wall poses a risk of injury during nasopharyngeal surgery.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the distances between the extracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) and the pharyngeal wall.

Material And Methods: Measurements were taken on certain levels of the pharynx using computed tomography angiography (angio-CT) scans of 97 patients.

Hearing Tests Based on Biologically Calibrated Mobile Devices: Comparison With Pure-Tone Audiometry.

Background: Hearing screening tests based on pure-tone audiometry may be conducted on mobile devices, provided that the devices are specially calibrated for the purpose. Calibration consists of determining the reference sound level and can be performed in relation to the hearing threshold of normal-hearing persons. In the case of devices provided by the manufacturer, together with bundled headphones, the reference sound level can be calculated once for all devices of the same model.

Evaluating the Hearing of Patients with Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome.

Background: It is estimated that pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) occurs in 10-20% of the general population over 60 years of age, and its morbidity increases with age. Some research indicates that PEX may be a systemic disease. Some experts state that it can also lead to ear dysfunction.

Nasal endoscopy: an adjunct to patient selection for preoperative low-dose CT examination in chronic rhinosinusitis.

Objectives: The growing awareness of increased X-ray exposure to the public has led to the propagation of several methods for reducing the radiation dose during CT examination. Low-dose CT protocols do not, however, have an established role in pre-operative evaluation. The aim of this article was to assess the usefulness of nasal endoscopy in the selection of patients under pre-operative care for low-dose CT examination.

Background: The role of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection as an etiological factor of respiratory tract papillomas has been described in numerous studies, however its role in malignant transformation has not been clearly defined. Depending on their oncogenic potential they have been classified as low- and high-risk HPVs. We analyzed the expression of four cell cycle-related proteins in order to understand the processes leading to malignant transformation.

Coexistent chronic myelogenous leukemia with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx associated with NOD2/CARD15 mutation in a young adult.

We report the case of a 37-year-old man with human papillomavirus-positive squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx coexisting with chronic myelogenous leukemia. The patient had no history of smoking or alcohol consumption. Within a few months, his rapidly growing tumor was classified as T4aN2cM0.

Hearing Tests on Mobile Devices: Evaluation of the Reference Sound Level by Means of Biological Calibration.

Background: Hearing tests carried out in home setting by means of mobile devices require previous calibration of the reference sound level. Mobile devices with bundled headphones create a possibility of applying the predefined level for a particular model as an alternative to calibrating each device separately.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the reference sound level for sets composed of a mobile device and bundled headphones.

Diabetes and Cancer: a Review of Current Knowledge.

Diabetes mellitus (DM), one of the most common life-threatening illnesses worldwide, is a group of metabolic diseases, characterized by sustained hyperglycemia. The global prevalence of diabetes mellitus among adults reached 387 millions in 2014 and is still rising. It is suggested there is a strong association between diabetes mellitus (especially type 2 diabetes mellitus) and carcinogenesis.

Measurements of electrical impedance of biomedical objects.

Some basic problems related to measurements of electrical impedance of biological objects (bioimpedance) have been presented in this paper. Particularly problems arising from impedance occurring at the sensor-tissue interface (interfacial impedances) in contact measuring methods have been discussed. The influence of finite values of impedances of the current source and voltage measuring device has also been taken into consideration.

Granulomatosis With Polyangiitis in Otolaryngologist Practice: A Review of Current Knowledge.

Correlation between levels of expression of minichromosome maintenance proteins, Ki-67 proliferation antigen and metallothionein I/II in laryngeal squamous cell cancer.

MCM2, MCM3 and MCM7 are minichromosome maintenance proteins found in dividing cells and they play a role in DNA synthesis. Increased MCM expression level is observed in cells of different cancer types. Additionally, metallothioneins (MT-I/II) are involved in control of cell proliferation and differentiation and changes of their expression are observed in many types of cancer.

IMPACT OF GENISTEIN AND PHYTIC ACID ON THE VIABILITY AND PROLIFERATION ACTIVITY OF NASAL POLYPS' CELLS IN AN IN VITRO MODEL.

In developed countries, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps is one of the diseases that diminish patients' quality of life most significantly. Treatment of that often incurable disease is based on the steroids and surgery in patients who had failed thorough conservative management. It appears that the introduction of new treatment agents suppressing inflammation process and inhibiting cells' proliferation would be a valuable therapeutic option.

The Lipomatosis of the Parapharyngeal and Retropharyngeal Space: A Case Report.

Introduction: Lipomas are the most common benign mesenchymal tumors, which account for almost 50% of all soft-tissue tumors.

Case Outline: The case of a 75-year-old patient with a slow growing lesion of para- and retropharyngeal space was reported. The patient was suffering from progressive dysphagia, respiratory obstruction and sleep apnea.

[Bilateral squamous carcinoma of the external auditory canal--a case report].

Squamous cell carcinoma of the external auditory canal is a very rare and unusual malignancy, representing less than 0.2% of all head and neck cancers. The authors present a case of 78-year-old patient with bilateral squamous cell carcinoma of the external auditory canal-cT4N0M0 G2, pT4N2bM0, initially treated as a chronic otitis external.

[Bilateral external auditory canal cholesteatoma - a case report].

The external auditory canal cholesteatoma is a rare and difficult to diagnose disease. Symptoms are similar to the external ear canal inflammation and can be masked by retained cerumen. In the article we described a case of 22 year old, mentally impairment women with bilateral otorrhea, in the past treated for external ear canal inflammation.

Epidermal differentiation complex (locus 1q21) gene expression in head and neck cancer and normal mucosa.

Epidermal differentiation complex (EDC) comprises a number of genes associated with human skin diseases including psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and hyperkeratosis. These genes have also been linked to numerous cancers, among them skin, gastric, colorectal, lung, ovarian and renal carcinomas. The involvement of EDC components encoding S100 proteins, small proline-rich proteins (SPRRs) and other genes in the tumorigenesis of head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC) has been previously suggested.

Intralaryngeal ectopic thyroid.

Lingual thyroid is the most common presentation of ectopic thyroid tissue. In contrast, to that laryngeal location is extremely rare. We report a case of 59 years old woman with a history of progressive dyspnea and nodular thyroid goiter.
