Complementing the oft-studied construct of isolation, research has increasingly focused on existential isolation (EI), or the subjective feeling of separateness in one's experience. In the clinical realm, several studies have demonstrated that higher EI is associated with more severe mental health problems at a single cross-section of time. Moreover, one study showed that higher pretreatment EI predicted worse psychotherapy outcomes.

Cognitive and Neurobiological Correlates for Switching/Inhibition Moderate the Relations Between Word Reading and Reading Comprehension in Hebrew-Speaking Children: An fMRI Study.

The expanded Simple View of Reading model suggests language processing and word reading as contributors to reading comprehension and points at the participation of executive functions as supporting these abilities. Switching and inhibition are both executive functions (EF) contributing to reading, especially in languages with two writing systems-shallow and deep, such as Hebrew. Here, we aimed to determine the specific role of switching/inhibition both cognitively and neurobiologically in the Simple View of Reading model among 49 eight- to 12-year-old Hebrew-speaking children.

HIV replication and tuberculosis risk among people living with HIV in Europe: A multicohort analysis, 1983-2015.

Introduction: HIV replication leads to a change in lymphocyte phenotypes that impairs immune protection against opportunistic infections. We examined current HIV replication as an independent risk factor for tuberculosis (TB).

Methods: We included people living with HIV from 25 European cohorts 1983-2015.

Long-term survival of kidney-transplant recipient with donor-transmitted malignant melanoma after provoked rejection.

Donor-transmitted malignancy is a rare and often fatal complication of organ transplantation. We report a case of a 55-year old male kidney transplant recipient who was diagnosed with stage-IV donor-transmitted melanoma 5 months after transplantation with metastases in the liver, spleen, lung, and brain. Immunosuppression was discontinued, and encorafenib and binimetinib, inhibitors of a serine/threonine B-Raf proto-oncogene (BRAF) and mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MEK) respectively, were started.

Background: A balanced diet rich in calcium and protein is recommended for bone-healthy people and osteoporosis patients, but it may also be important for rare bone disease (RBD). Little data is available on RBD and diet. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional behavior of patients with RBD.

X-ray Thomson scattering absolute intensity from the f-sum rule in the imaginary-time domain.

We present a formally exact and simulation-free approach for the normalization of X-ray Thomson scattering (XRTS) spectra based on the f-sum rule of the imaginary-time correlation function (ITCF). Our method works for any degree of collectivity, over a broad range of temperatures, and is applicable even in nonequilibrium situations. In addition to giving us model-free access to electronic correlations, this new approach opens up the intriguing possibility to extract a plethora of physical properties from the ITCF based on XRTS experiments.

Release dynamics of nanodiamonds created by laser-driven shock-compression of polyethylene terephthalate.

Laser-driven dynamic compression experiments of plastic materials have found surprisingly fast formation of nanodiamonds (ND) via X-ray probing. This mechanism is relevant for planetary models, but could also open efficient synthesis routes for tailored NDs. We investigate the release mechanics of compressed NDs by molecular dynamics simulation of the isotropic expansion of finite size diamond from different P-T states.

Neural fingerprinting is a method to identify individuals from a group of people. Here, we established a new connectome-based identification model and used diffusion maps to show that biological parent-child couples share functional connectivity patterns while listening to stories. These shared fingerprints enabled the identification of children and their biological parents from a group of parents and children.

Health-related quality of life and fatigue in adult rare bone disease patients: A cross-sectional study from Austria.

Objectives: To assess physical and mental health domains of health related quality of life (HRQoL) as well as fatigue in rare bone disease (RBD) patients and to compare to patients with osteoporosis (OPO) and healthy controls (CTRL) without known bone diseases and to study associations of Fatique Severity Scale (FSS) with eight domains of HRQoL.

Methods: Monocentric, cross-sectional study carried out between 2020 and 2022 in a hospital affiliated with the Vienna Bone and Growth Center (European Reference Network Center for Rare Bone Disease) in Vienna, Austria. The study comprised three types of RBD: Osteogenesis imperfecta, Hypophosphatasia and X-linked Hypophosphatemia.

Potential and Uncertainties of RejectClass in Acute Kidney Graft Dysfunction: An Independent Validation Study.

Background: Kidney graft rejections are classified based on the Banff classification. The RejectClass algorithm, initially derived from a cohort comprising mostly protocol biopsies, identifies data-driven phenotypes of acute rejection and chronic pathology using Banff lesion scores.
