Colletotrichum acutatum J. H. Simmond is the causal agent of anthracnose rot and strawberry blackspot.

[Measurement of biological age and its role in osteoporosis prevention].

The actual level of factual individual ageing of organism is characterized by biological age. By means of measuring function ability of physiological systems it is possible to evaluate the biological age and use it as an indicator of premature ageing and therefore as an indicator of the risk of getting ill. The article brings an overview of contemporary used, non-standard markers for the measurement of biological age and uncovers the possibility of measurement of biological age (BA) of skeleton and its use in osteoporosis precaution.

Separation of enantiomers of butorphanol and cycloamine by capillary zone electrophoresis.

Butorphanol tartrate is a synthetic opioid agonist-antagonist used as analgesic, possessing three chiral centres in the basic part of the molecule. Its chiral purity is routinely controlled only by optical rotation. A new capillary zone electrophoresis method, capable to separate the enantiomers of butorphanol and intermediate of its synthesis, cycloamine, was developed.

Isotachophoretic determination of added phosphate in meat products.

From the phosphate content in meat and meat protein a new ratio of free (non-protein) phosphate/protein (16±2 mg/g) was calculated. From the level of soluble phosphate determined by capillary isotachophoresis (CITP), protein content determined by Kjeldahl method and with the use of the earlier-mentioned ratio the amount of added phosphates could be calculated. The method was compared with the spectrophotometric dry-ashing reference method on 34 samples and good agreement was found.

Analysis of the active components of silymarin.

Silymarin is an antihepatotoxic substance isolated from fruits of Silybum marianum. Possibly due to their antioxidant and membrane stabilizing properties, the compounds have been shown to protect different organs and cells against a number of insults. The content and composition of main silymarin components (silybin, isosilybin, silydianin and silychristin) in various pharmaceuticals were analysed using HPLC and newly developed capillary zone electrophoresis method.

Resistance to antibiotics in gram-negative rods from clinical material of hospital and community origin.

The authors examined the resistance to 13 antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents by the diluting micromethod and the routine disk method in the group of 5375 gram-negative strains of 7 genera which prevailed in clinical material of an hospital (FN Olomouc) and in material of community (OHS Olomouc) provenance during the years 1992 and 1993. In the majority of cases, the resistance was more frequent in the strains isolated from the hospital material. The most remarkable differences were found in A cinetobacter sp.

Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori in some patients undergoing upper endoscopy.

The group of 156 patients undergoing upper endoscopy at the Department of Central Endoscopy, University Hospital in Olomouc was followed up for determination of HP status by means of the methods of culture, microscopic examination and determination of specific IgG antibodies by ELISA method. Prevalence of HP was determined in individual groups of the series under study (peptic gastroduodenal lesion, antral gastritis of type B, duodenitis) and in subjects with normal endoscopic finding. The most frequent HP positivity was established by the method of specific antibodies determination by ELISA, then microscopic evidence of HP and finally culture.

Effects of intravenous and intracutaneous bacillus Calmette-Guérin application on the drug-metabolizing system of the liver.

Both single intravenous and repeated intracutaneous injections of bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) resulted in alteration of the hepatic microsomal drug-metabolizing enzymes of the rat liver. The cytochrome P-450 content was not significantly altered; its activity (ethoxycoumarin O-dealkylation) was inhibited in both the intravenous and intracutaneous group. The arylhydrocarbon-hydroxylase and aminopyrine-demethylase activities were also diminished; decrease of cytochrome-c-reductase activity was noted after intravenous application only.

Two primary malignant melanomas in a patient with plasmacytoma.

The occurrence of two primary malignant melanomas (superficial spreading melanoma, superficial spreading melanoma with nodular growth) in a patient with diffuse plasmacytoma treated with chemotherapy and radiation is described. Such an association does not appear to have been reported previously.

The effect of temperature and age of strains of Fusarium oxysporum on its enzymatic activity.

The activities of pectin-methyl-esterase, polygalacturonase, cellulase, amylase, saccharase, and protease of strains of Fusarium oxysporum (Schlecht.) f.sp.

Activity of pectinases, amylases, and saccharase in Pythium spp.

The activity of pectine-lyase, polygalacturonase, pectine-methyl-esterase, amylase, and saccharase in Pythium ultimum, Pythium oligandrum, and Pythium debaryanum was determined. Cultures of fungi were cultivated under different temperatures and pH-values within 24 hours and 15 days. The optimum temperature for production of the mentioned enzymes was found to be 24 degrees C.

Cellulolytic activity of some Pythium species.

The cellulolytic activity of Pythium ultimum and P. oligandrum was investigated in vitro during the mycelium growth. It was found that under a constant temperature of 24 degrees C the cellulolytic activity was changed according to the pH of the medium.

[Multinodular reticulohistiocytosis in the adult. Clinical picture, histology and electron microscopy].

Multiple nodular infiltrates of reticulohistiocytic cells may progressively develop in human adult skin showing intracellular lipid storage (neutral lipids, phospholipids, free cholesterin), without changes of the lipid levels in blood. These are obviously benign reactive lesions, which may spontaneously disappear. Concomitant skin or systemic diseases may occur.

Although herpes zoster is a viral infection with spontaneous healing, the skin eruption is painful and there may be serious complications. Cytarabine was administered to 91 patients with the disease. It was given by quick infusion or intravenously twice daily for five days.
