[The biochemical marker dynamics of the maternal serum in different chromosomal disorders of the fetus].

The reasons for false-positive results of Down syndrome screening have been analysed. It has been found that the family pericentric inversions of chromosome 9 in fetus are accompanied by AFP and HCG changes equal to Down syndrome pregnancies. The average marker's levels in cases of per inv (9) were: AFp-0.

Expression of rat gene for L-gulono-gamma-lactone oxidase, the key enzyme of L-ascorbic acid biosynthesis, in guinea pig cells and in teleost fish rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

The ability of rainbow trout liver and kidney preparations to produce L-ascorbic acid with an added source of L-gulono-gamma-lactone oxidase (GLO) and the absence of their own GLO activity suggested that the reason for the absence of L-ascorbic acid biosynthesis in fish and in guinea pig, a scurvy-prone mammal, can be similar. Nevertheless, results of rat GLO cDNA expression in guinea pig cells and in rainbow trout proved different. In guinea pig cells, rat GLO was expressed in a functional form.

Forum domain in Drosophila melanogaster cut locus possesses looped domains inside.

We have studied the relationship between chromosomal forum domains and looped domains in the cut locus of Drosophila melanogaster . Forum domains were earlier detected by separation in pulsed-field gels of 50-150 kb chromosomal DNA fragments obtained after spontaneous non-random degradation of chromosomes. We have localized the boundary region where cleavage sites are scattered between two forum domains in the regulatory region of the cut locus.

The delivery of foreign genes into fertilized fish eggs using high-velocity microprojectiles.

Fertilized eggs of loach (Misgurnus fossilis), rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) and zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio) were bombarded with high-velocity tungsten microprojectiles covered with plasmid DNA containing sequences of beta-galactosidase and neomycin phosphotransferase genes. About 70% of the eggs survived the bombardment. The activity of both transferred genes was revealed in the fish developed from the bombarded eggs.

[Experience with the treatment of patients with ankylosing spondyloarthritis].

Hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) for ankylosing spondylarthritis was employed in Kuibyshev Medical Institute for 10 years. The response was registered in 94.4% ot 142 patients treated as shown by positive changes in external respiration, performance status, electromyographic, laboratory, biochemical and immunological findings.

[Diagnosis and treatment of injuries of the tendons of the biceps muscle of arm].

An analysis of clinical observations (126 patients) enabled the authors to make a conclusion that early diagnostics and early operative treatment are important for better results of treatment of patients with injuries of humeral biceps tendons . Differentiated approach to treatment of such patients is thought by the authors to be necessary. The method of choice for treatment of patients with neglected injuries of the humeral biceps tendons is, to the authors' opinion, "tonicizing" autologous tendoplasty.

[Diagnosis and therapy of Achilles tendon injuries].

On the basis of voluminous clinical material (218 patients) the authors consider the peculiarities of diagnosis and treatment of victims with Achilles tendon damages. The authors pay special attention to the thorough clinical investigation of patients, indicate the importance of early diagnosis and opportune operative treatment. The authors present the basic principles of surgical tactics which ensure correct approach to the selection of operative treatment in case of Achilles tendon rupture.

[High velocity mechanical injection of foreign DNA into fish oocytes].

High-velocity tungsten microprojectiles were used to introduce into fertilized eggs of loach (Misgurnus fossilis), Rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri Rich.) and Zebra fish (Brachydanio rerio) DNA sequences of beta-galactosidase and neomycin phosphotransferase genes. No more than 30% of fish oocytes died as a result of bombardment.

[Pathological reconstruction of the tibia after radiotherapy].

In 6 patients with sarcomas of the bones of the crus at different periods following radiotherapy the authors have revealed pathologic reconstruction of the structure of the tibia. A roentgenologic picture of the changes in the course of the dynamic observation of the patients and their treatment is presented. It has been demonstrated that the conservative treatment effective.

[Surgical treatment of foot deformities].

The authors analyse their many-year experience gained in the treatment of patients with foot deformities of various origins, carried out at the traumatology clinic of the Kuibyshev D. I. Ulyanov Medical Institute.

[Radiation injuries of the vertebrae].

The results of examination of 12 patients with vertebral radiation injuries were analyzed. The authors considered clinical and x-ray signs of radiation osteoporosis (5), radiation osteonecrosis (7 patients), and complications in the form of pathological fractures of vertebral bodies. Vertebral radiation injuries were most frequently detected 6-12 yrs.

[Radiation injuries of the bones during treatment of uterine cancer].

The data on 53 cases of bone injuries caused by radiation treatment for cancer of the uterus were analysed. The clinico-roentgenological signs of osteoradionecrosis (33), pathological fracture and dislocation (13), osteomyelitis (5) and radiation-induced sarcoma of bone (2) were considered. Lesions were found to occur most frequently in the upper flaring portion of the ilium and bones of the hip joints.
