Introduction: The present study explored age effects and the coupling of sensorimotor and cognitive functions in a stratified sample of 96 middle-aged and older adults (age 45-86 years) with no indication of mild cognitive decline. In our sensorimotor tasks, we had an emphasis on listening in noise and postural control, but we also assessed functional mobility and tactile sensitivity.

Methods: Our cognitive measures comprised processing speed and assessments of core cognitive control processes (executive functions), notably inhibition, task switching, and working memory updating.

Purpose: We investigated cognitive-motor multitasking in 29 top athletes with intellectual impairment (II) recruited during the European Championship Games organized by Virtus (World Intellectual Impairment Sports) and 29 control (CT) athletes matched for age, sex, sports practiced, and lifetime accumulated practice hours.

We investigated task-set control processes and chunking in 16 novices and 16 amateur musicians, who produced unimanual rhythms in three experimental conditions: low-level timing tasks required isochronous tapping at constant target durations; sequencing tasks consisted of individual rhythmic patterns comprising multiple target durations; the task-set control condition required alternations between two rhythmic patterns. According to our hierarchical timing control model conditions differed in their task-set control demands necessary to provide rhythm programs for the sequencing of individual intervals. Transitions at predicted chunk boundaries were marked by increased frequencies of sequence errors, relative lengthening of intervals preceding the switch to a new rhythm chunk, and increased variabilities in intervals immediately following a switch.

We investigated the influence of image mediation (the process that translates tactile information into a visual image) on the development of haptic two-dimensional (2D) shape identification in 78 participants from five different age groups: preschoolers (4-5 years), first graders (6-7 years), fifth graders (10-11 years), young adolescents (12-13 years), and young adults (18-28 years). Participants attempted to haptically recognize everyday objects (three-dimensional [3D] haptic condition) and tangible line drawings (2D haptic condition) and to recognize objects presented through a serial visual "peek hole" version of the haptic line drawing task (2D visual condition). Specific knowledge about the dissolution behavior under biorelevant conditions is of high interest for the rational development of orodispersible films (ODFs). As the conditions in the oral cavity strongly differ from those in the gastrointestinal tract and from those performed with the pharmacopoeial test setups, a biorelevant dissolution setup was developed in this work, considering the mechanical force of the tongue, the saliva flow, the small fluid volume and the saliva composition. Especially in the initial phase, dissolution profiles of KTP (ketoprofen) ODFs observed by the new method showed a slower drug release than obtained with setups based on conventional dissolution methods.
