Introduction: Junctional epidermolysis bullosa (JEB) is a rare genetic disease manifesting with skin and mucosal blistering. As part of the JEB, patients present with syndromic amelogenesis imperfecta (AI). Reports have described external crown resorption (ECR) in the teeth of patients with JEB, but its prevalence is unknown.

"Hot Tongue and Mouth" on 18F-FDG PET/CT Due to Buccolingual Masticatory Syndrome, Caused by Metoclopramide Antiemetic Treatment.

We present a case of a 66-year-old man, where 18F-FDG PET/CT revealed intense FDG uptake in the tongue, lips, cheeks, and chewing musculature and distinct activation of the somatosensory and motor cortex corresponding to the mouth and tongue. The patient suffered from buccolingual masticatory syndrome, characterized by tardive dyskinesia, meaning uncontrollable, repetitive movements of the tongue, lips, cheeks, and masticatory musculature. In this case, the buccolingual masticatory syndrome was caused by metoclopramide antiemetic treatment.

Remission induction therapies and long-term outcomes in granulomatosis with polyangiitis and microscopic polyangiitis: real-world data from a European cohort.

To explore disease characteristics, renal involvement and induction treatment strategies over the last decades and evaluate relapse rates and renal outcomes in ANCA-associated vasculitides (AAV). We retrospectively analyzed remission, relapse rates and the occurrence of the composite endpoint (comprising death and renal failure) in newly diagnosed AAV cases in four tertial referral centers in Germany and Switzerland diagnosed between 1999 and 2022. Hazard ratios were computed by Cox proportional hazard and Kaplan-Meier curves were plotted to compare therapeutic strategies after propensity-matching.

Previous research has demonstrated that hearing impairment is associated with heightened subjective experiences of listening effort, fatigue, and stress, impacting daily functioning. This study aimed to evaluate whether hearing impairment alters physiological stress systems and whether different aspects of hearing impairment could vary in predicting dysregulation in these systems. Hallmark measures of parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system activity were derived from electrocardiography, impedance cardiography, and electrodermal activity recordings taken from 133 individuals, aged 37 to 73, over two 24-hr periods, including sleep.

Effect of polyacrylamide gel elasticity on collagen type II fibril assembly.

Collagen type II fibrils provide structural integrity to the articular cartilage extracellular matrix. However, the conditions that control the fibril radial size scale, distribution, and formation inside of dense networks are not well understood. We have investigated how surrounding elastic networks affect fibril formation by observing the structure and dynamics of collagen type II in model polyacrylamide gels of varying moduli.

A positive atmospheric feedback on the North Atlantic warming hole.

A persistent cooling trend in the subpolar North Atlantic known as the North Atlantic Warming Hole (NAWH) has appeared in sea surface temperature (SST) observations since 1870, and the reasons for its persistence in an era of rapid anthropogenic global warming remain elusive. Here we investigate the response of the atmosphere to the NAWH in a set of model experiments, and further examine the associated feedback mechanisms. In one experiment, the observed warming hole is imposed upon the present-day climatology, and in another we run a sensitivity experiment, shifting the location of the warming hole southward of its observed location to limit its direct interaction with the jet stream.

Non-Invasive Monitoring of Corticosterone Levels in Mouse Urine with Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Ionization-Tandem Mass Spectrometry.

An innovative method for the quantification of corticosterone in the urine of C57BL/6J mice by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry was developed. Unconjugated and glucuronidated corticosterone was detected in the urine samples using enzymatic hydrolysis following liquid-liquid extraction. After optimization of the extraction protocol and LC-MS/MS parameters, we performed a validation study using a representative urine pool of C57BL/6J and Naval Medical Research Institute mice.

Causal inference concepts can guide research into the effects of climate on infectious diseases.

A pressing question resulting from global warming is how climate change will affect infectious diseases. Answering this question requires research into the effects of weather on the population dynamics of transmission and infection; elucidating these effects, however, has proved difficult due to the challenges of assessing causality from the predominantly observational data available in epidemiological research. Here we show how concepts from causal inference-the sub-field of statistics aiming at inferring causality from data-can guide that research.

Benzylic C(sp)-H Phosphonylation via Dual Photo and Copper Catalysis.

Alkyl phosphonates are important motifs in medicinal chemistry, yet their efficient synthesis by direct C(sp)-H functionalization remains a challenge. Here, we report straightforward access to benzylic phosphonates by direct C(sp)-H functionalization in a cross-dehydrogenative-coupling reaction between non-specialized alkylarenes and unfunctionalized phosphites. Notably, the C-H substrates are used as the limiting reagents.

Characterizing the interactions between influenza and respiratory syncytial viruses and their implications for epidemic control.

Pathogen-pathogen interactions represent a critical but little-understood feature of infectious disease dynamics. In particular, experimental evidence suggests that influenza virus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) compete with each other, such that infection with one confers temporary protection against the other. However, such interactions are challenging to study using common epidemiologic methods.

Background: Vegaven is a novel lipid emulsion for parenteral nutrition (PN) based on 18-carbon n-3 (ω-3) fatty acids, which elicits liver protection via interleukin-10 (IL-10) in the murine model of PN.

Objectives: In a preclinical model of PN in neonatal piglets, Vegaven was tested for efficacy and safety and compared with a mixed-oil lipid emulsion containing fish oil (SMOFlipid).

Methods: Male piglets 4-5 d old were randomly allocated to isocaloric isonitrogenous PN for 14 d, which varied only by the type of lipid emulsion (Vegaven, n = 8; SMOFlipid, n = 8).

PET imaging of pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma - 18F-FDOPA vs. somatostatin analogues.

Context: Functional imaging with positron emission tomography (PET) scans is an essential part of the diagnostic workup for pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PPGL). The purpose of this review is a) to provide a brief overview of functional imaging for PPGL, b) summarize selected present and older guideline and review recommendations, and c) conduct a literature review on the diagnostic performance of the most used PET tracers for PPGL.
