Single-step 3D printing aided cranio-orbital reconstruction with patient specific polyetheretherketone implants after resection of benign spheno-orbital tumors.

Purpose: Computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) techniques have paved the way for single-step resections and cranio-orbital reconstructions with patient specific implants in spheno-orbital tumors. Here, we present our interdisciplinary maxillofacial and neurosurgical workflow and a case series of patients treated with this integrated approach.

Methods: Patients, who underwent single-step resection of benign spheno-orbital tumors and cranio-orbital reconstruction with polyetheretherketone (PEEK) patient specific implants (PSI) from 2019 to 2024 in our institution were included.

Pituitary Apoplexy in Macroadenoma After Minor Surgery: An Unusual Case and Literature Review.

Pituitary apoplexy is a rare and severe complication of pituitary adenoma that may present with new-onset headache, ocular palsy, visual disturbances, life-threatening electrolyte imbalance, and endocrinological disturbances due to pituitary hemorrhage and/or infarction. We report the case of a 58-year-old previously healthy patient who developed isolated mild oculomotor nerve palsy of the left eye following osteosynthesis of a traumatic right distal radius fracture. Initial cerebral magnetic resonance imaging showed a pituitary macroadenoma without characteristic signs of pituitary infarction or hemorrhage.

Lumbar Spinous Process-Splitting Technique for Ligamentum Flavum Cyst Removal.

Background:  Laminotomy for lumbar stenosis is a well-defined procedure and represents a routine in every neurosurgical department. It is a common experience that the uni- or bilateral paraspinal muscle detachment, together with injury of the supra- and interspinous ligaments, can lead to postoperative pain. In the literature, the application of a minimally invasive technique, the lumbar spinous process-splitting (LSPS) technique, has been reported.

VarioGuide® frameless neuronavigation-guided stereoelectroencephalography in adult epilepsy patients: technique, accuracy and clinical experience.

Background: Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) allows the identification of deep-seated seizure foci and determination of the epileptogenic zone (EZ) in drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) patients. We evaluated the accuracy and treatment-associated morbidity of frameless VarioGuide® (VG) neuronavigation-guided depth electrode (DE) implantations.

Methods: We retrospectively identified all consecutive adult DRE patients, who underwent VG-neuronavigation DE implantations, between March 2013 and April 2019.

The life-shortening effect of reduced physical activity is abolished by a fat rich diet.

In female mice on a control diet (3.6% fat) reduced physical activity leads to a reduction of the average life span. So the average age at death of an inactive group is 500 +/- 166 compared to 565 +/- 175 days in an active control group.
