Background Rapid treatment of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) significantly reduces morbidity and mortality rates. Recent studies emphasize the importance of reducing total ischemic time, making first-medical-contact-to-balloon (FMCTB) time a key performance indicator. To improve FMCTB times in patients brought to the Emergency Department (ED) by Emergency Medical Services (EMS), we implemented a "Direct to Lab" (DTL) workflow during the following conditions: weekday daytime hours, when the lab is fully staffed, and for hemodynamically stable STEMI patients presenting via EMS.

Targeted delivery of neurochemicals and biomolecules for neuromodulation of brain activity is a powerful technique that, in addition to electrical recording and stimulation, enables a more thorough investigation of neural circuit dynamics. We have designed a novel, flexible, implantable neural probe capable of controlled, localized chemical stimulation and electrophysiology recording. The neural probe was implemented using planar micromachining processes on Parylene C, a mechanically flexible, biocompatible substrate.

Vascular damage and reduced tissue perfusion are expected to majorly contribute to the loss of neurons or neural signals around implanted electrodes. However, there are limited methods of controlling the vascular dynamics in tissues surrounding these implants. This work utilizes conducting polymer poly(ethylenedioxythiophene) and sulfonated silica nanoparticle composite (PEDOT/SNP) to load and release a vasodilator, sodium nitroprusside, to controllably dilate the vasculature around carbon fiber electrodes (CFEs) implanted in the mouse cortex.

Chronic sampling of tonic serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) concentrations in the brain is critical for tracking neurological disease development and the time course of pharmacological treatments. Infrasound describes ubiquitous, low-frequency sound (< 20 Hz) in the environment with a long wavelength below the median hearing threshold, which can nevertheless be heard and tactilely perceived, depending on the sound pressure level and frequency spectrum. In nature, infrasound emissions usually occur only in the low-threshold range. Nevertheless, after strong and chronic exposure to usually artificially generated infrasound emissions, various effects on the ear and the body, sometimes questionably critical to health, can be observed.

Neural electrode insertion trauma impedes the recording and stimulation capabilities of numerous diagnostic and treatment avenues. Implantation leads to the activation of inflammatory markers and cell types, which is detrimental to neural tissue health and recording capabilities. Oxidative stress and inflammation at the implant site have been shown to decrease with chronic administration of antioxidant melatonin at week 16, but its effects on the acute landscape have not been studied.

Integration of a photobioreactor for WWT by microalgae is calculated as a future alternative for cost-efficient and environmentally-friendly nutrient removal for municipal WWTPs. High growth rates and higher biogas yields (compared to conventional sewage sludge) of algal biomass can significantly improve WWTP energy balances. This study focuses on temperate climate zones with changing seasons and discusses energy potential of microalgae-enhanced wastewater treatment for an existing WWTP (32,000 PE) in Central Germany.

In winter 2007-2008, an outbreak of pediatric pneumonia caused by serotype 5 pneumococci was identified in a northeast London suburb. Variable number of tandem repeat analyses clustered these pneumococci from the other serotype 5 pneumococci in the United Kingdom, highlighting the importance of this discriminative typing method in supporting epidemiological investigations.

In January 2009, the eleventh [corrected] case of Lassa fever imported to the United Kingdom was diagnosed in London. Risk assessment of 328 healthcare contacts with potential direct exposure to Lassa virus - through contact with the case or exposure to bodily fluids - was undertaken. No contacts were assessed to be at high risk of infection and no secondary clinical cases identified.

Leptospirosis is a re-emerging zoonosis with worldwide distribution. Antibiotic treatment is available, but leptospirosis is rarely suspected due to the non-specific clinical presentation, and is also underreported due to the difficulty in confirming the diagnosis. The syndrome of leptospirosis pulmonary haemorrhage is increasingly described; it is severe and can present without the classical manifestations of Weil's disease.

Background: Necrotizing fasciitis is life-threatening bacterial infection which spreads with frightening speed along the fascial planes resulting in extensive tissue necrosis and often death. The infection is caused by either Group A streptococci or a combination of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Necrotizing fasciitis of the neck is rare and commonly has a dental origin.
