Criteria for success in strabismus surgery should include more than just the alignment result in primary position. It is important to consider as well the extent of the field of BSV gained: restoring a useful range of BSV will maximize the patient's ability to carry on daily activities. Psychometric tests can also be used to provide objective measures of improvement following strabismus surgery.

Botulinum toxin is sometimes injected into human eye muscles as an alternative to surgery in the correction of strabismus. Within minutes of botulinum injections into ungulate eye muscles, proprioceptive discharge from muscle spindles decreases dramatically. It is only over 7-48 h, however, that surgically treated strabismus patients usually show an altered proprioceptive signal about eye position, presumably from the palisade endings attached to the global multiply innervated fibers.

Three computerized multimedia programs on large and small animal veterinary orthopedic radiology were developed and implemented for the radiology curriculum as an alternative to traditional film-based laboratory learning. Programs utilized "hot words" (colored text words that displayed an overlaid image label that highlighted lesions) and interactive quizzes which responded appropriately to selected answers. "Hot words" helped students develop confidence in accurate lesion detection and the interactive quizzes transformed learning from a passive to an active process.

Novel 1H,7H-5a,6,8,9-tetrahydro-1-oxopyrano [4,3-b][1]benzopyrans were synthesized in Hua's laboratory (code names H5, H10, H14 and H15) and tested for their ability to prevent L1210 leukemic cells from synthesizing macromolecules and growing in vitro. The aryl groups of these tricyclic pyrone (TP) analogs are either 3, 4-dimethoxyphenyl in H5 and H15 or 3-pyridyl in H10 and H14. Since 50 M H5 and H10 both inhibit DNA synthesis and tumor cell growth by 79-100%, concentrations 25 M were used in this study to assess the structure-activity relationships for this class of compounds.

Twenty-four-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) has many advantages for the diagnosis and follow-up of hypertension at all ages. This technique has so far not been documented as applicable to the very young. We studied the feasibility of ABPM in 61 healthy children and in 40 patients with renal diseases and/or hypertension, aged less than 6 years.

We studied expression of the 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) pathway in normal human skin. In situ hybridization revealed a 5-LO mRNA-containing epidermal cell (EC) population that was predominantly located in the midportion of the spinous layer, in outer hair root sheaths, and in the epithelial compartment of sebaceous glands. Examination of skin specimens by immunohistochemistry and of primary ECs by flow cytometry mapped the 5-LO protein exclusively to Langerhans cells (LCs).

New tricyclic pyrone derivatives were synthesized and tested for their ability to prevent L1210 leukemic cells from synthesizing DNA and growing in vitro. At 50 microM, a pyripyropene analog has no effect, whereas four pentahydro-3-aryl-1-oxopyrano[4,3-b][1]benzopyrans all inhibit DNA synthesis by 79-91% and tumor cell growth by 93-100%. These inhibitory effects are concentration dependent with IC50 around 8.

Objective: To analyze eye care specialist referral patterns for the diabetic patients of primary care physicians.

Research Design And Methods: In 1993, we conducted a census of primary care physicians to evaluate practice patterns relating to diabetes care in the state of Indiana. Using a logistic regression model and data from this census, we compared 1) physicians' odds of referring type II diabetic patients to an optometrist, as opposed to an ophthalmologist, with those of type I diabetic patients and 2) the referral odds ratios of type II to type I diabetic patients between metropolitan and nonmetropolitan counties.

Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) poses a large social and economic burden on society. There are now methods for identifying persons at risk for IDDM and increasing evidence suggest that it may be possible to delay or even prevent the clinical presentation of the disease. This raises the question of whether a prevention program for IDDM should be initiated through public health channels.

The recent structural and functional analysis of the high affinity receptor for IgE (Fc epsilon RI) expressed on human epidermal Langerhans cells (LC) revealed new aspects of the biology of this structure. In contrast to basophils and mast cells where this receptor seems to be expressed constitutively at a constant level, the expression of Fc epsilon RI on LC varies on the donor and the inflammatory environment of the cells and lacks the classical beta-chain. This also implies functional differences most probably related to the expression level.
